What Viking Parties Were Like

Weird History | January 21, 2026

Ancient Norse seafaring Vikings were well-known as explorers, traders, and warriors. But when they got down, they weren’t messing around. Sure, Norse Sagas tell of epic voyages, and etymological studies have granted insight into the lands to which they traveled and settled. Archeological evidence has revealed records of weapons and armor they fought with. But what our current perception of the Vikings sometimes overlooks, and shamefully so, is that, in addition to thrilling expeditions to far-flung lands, Vikings had some pretty wild festivities. Maybe you’re wondering “What were Viking parties like?”

    Ahmad ibn travelled with Volga Vikings in the 10th century. He attended a funeral and several parties. He talked about how the king was given a bowl of water to wash up. He would wash his face, then his mouth, and often times clear out his nose with snot rockets. The bowl would then be passed to the next highest ranking man would be given the bowl (the water was not replaced) who did the same thing. It this bowl full of dirty water, saliva, and mucus was passed from person to person who all did the same things 🤮🤮

    Can't remember the source, or not sure wether the following is actually true or not;
    Much like seating at the meadhalls, alcohol was a rare commodity and enough was around for the high ranking attendees, but necessarily for everyone. Lower ranking people drank others' vomit get themselves drunk.

    You really brush all every Christian author there as propaganda?? You're biased af. The vikings bragged about this stuff. Byzantine accounts are the best. Plus, just imagine our decent accounts of late Norman partying and pillaging cranked up to 11 for their ancestors. And you still think it's all propaganda just because the literate people at the time were Christian?

    Actually, the Introduction of Latin and Roman papistianity.
    Christian people don't bow to idols, nor call men Father, nor pray to any but the one true and living God, nor forbid to eat meat, nor affirm homosexuals in their sin.
