The Song That Started It All: Hanson’s “MMMBop” | MTV

MTV | January 5, 2026

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of two huge Hanson milestones, the release of “MMMBop” (April 15) and the track hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (May 24), MTV is debuting “The Song That Started It All” to commemorate the smash single’s success. In this premiere episode, the full story of “MMMBop” is revealed through a mix of iconic MTV 90’s throwback clips from the likes of “Total Request Live”, “House Of Style”, and more, and present-day interviews with the Hanson brothers themselves, the song’s producer Stephen Lironi and legacy MTV VJ, Dave Holmes. To this day, Hanson’s musical talents continue to thrive. Their brand-new album “Red Green Blue” is out now, marking their entry into their third decade as a band!

Makes sense now, why this song has always related so well, and it still has a great posotivd feeling to it, even though yeah, everything does fall away. You have to have a solid foundation inside you, to weather the challenges of life. You guys were cool and cute. Great, confident young men. Great to see this vid. Thank You.

Hanson was my life when they came out. My room had no white walls because I covered them . Including the ceiling. Now I'm almost 40 but if I could have my dream come true.. it would be to meet them. Not gonna happen but I know through their songs they helped me through several hard things. Thank you Hanson

One of the very few albums I've listened to (maybe the ONLY one, in fact) that got better the further you got into it, until the last song just blew you away. Tremendous talent and songwriting! Still one of my top 20 all time fave albums.

I had younger cousins were around the same age as Taylor and Zach, who loved Hanson back then. They got me into Hanson and I gotta say I can’t get over how fast the time went by. 😅

I often go against the grain…I have always disliked this song. But I understand why they are popular and why so many people like it.

    (That tour)

They were my first concert,as a surprise (from our parents) for me and my friends who were Hanson fans. This was right before my 8th birthday in 1998. A year later,I was listening to CKY via my cousin's stash. I went hard with old punk, death metal, black metal, thrash ect.

However,I still checked in on Hanson.

    I still love Hanson.

I even sing MMM'bop in the grocery store, somewhat outloud.

It’s so crazy how Zach had fame at such a young age just like Aaron Carter and they turned out so different really shows how much a loving and supporting family dynamic can play a role and lay the foundation to live a healthy life. And I don’t mean this in any ill towards Aaron Carter may he rest in peace

LOVE these guys. Taylor's my fave 🙂 And I love that Zach says I'm a little bit weird!'. All the best people are! Saw them in concert when they were down under a few years ago. It was great 🙂

Hanson dad came into the studio in Huntington Beach to rehears Ironically they rehearsed next to great white who would later play part in the death of over 100 plus dead from fire
There dad invented a hydrant that would connect to you back yard pool and this could be used to save your home way faster than calling 911… 10 grand I believe was the price … They should be billionaires by now

So many people didn't listen to the lyrics at the time. It has stood the test of time ❤ my kids were so embarrassed when I played it full blast on tne car stereo. Ive put i t on my funeral playlist, it is such an iconic song

I remember when MMBop hit. I was 30 something, raising my family and constantly being bombarded by music I didnt like. Then I heard MMBop. I was smitten then and have been to this day. I still love it and the Hanson boys. Hahaha my kids use to tease me about liking you. But never fear, I put your CD on the recorder on continuous repeat. Before I was done, they all loved you too. Now we are inducting the grandkids. And I still love you all.

I'm the same age as Kurt Cobain, and was lucky enough to grow up in Seattle, and experience the grunge phenomenon at the perfect age. I probably heard MMMBop for the first time on the MTV video and thought the kids were really cute. The song was catchy as hell but of course I had to pretend not to like it.

Seeing the story behind it, especially the fact the recording was arranged by the Dust Brothers, makes me proud to like it. Sure, maybe the recorded version seemed a bit overproduced and the kids too perfect (shades of the manufactured boy bands that catered to the screaming-girl demographic) but this is real. Thanks for the history lesson, MTV.
