VHS Memories and What Nostalgia Means to Me – Cinemassacre

Cinemassacre | January 4, 2026

Cinemassacre, this channel, is ultimately about nostalgia. Movies, games, retro topics, sometimes music. Everything I’ve loved in my early years, to the point of building little museums of nostalgia such as the Nerd room and the fake VHS “rental store”. But today I wanted to dive into different memories. VHS ones. Filming things off TV, my favorite VHS tapes, all that sort of stuff. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now.

This year, I’ll be making more videos like this, including movie reviews, gaming, various topics. For most of these, I will be going back to my traditional scripted format, where I write/organize what I’ll say, rather than doing it off-the-cuff like the podcast format. I feel I’m at my best this way. Unfortunately that means the podcast will not be continued. But Justin and Kieran will continue producing and editing. Justin will mostly be focused on Screenwave projects and Kieran is focused on his streaming channel.

I really liked video stores, used to go to them back in the day and rent a DVD I thought looked cool and if I liked it I would make my own copy of it then return it. No video stores at all in town where I live these days, long gone now

Man even just hearing that monster madness ad bring me back to such good times with movies on tv. Times we will never see again, it’s bittersweet but I’m glad I was alive for it.

This takes me back not only to the time when I visited video stores, also to the time when I was a huge cinemassacre fan and every new video at the website was a like GOOD NEWS.

this takes me back to a childhood bond with me and my dad when I would come over and have pizza and junk food and we would record blank dvds and record episodes from on regular show and adventure time from 2011-2012 cartoon network.

I definitely get that you're saying, James. Very similar memories here. I think ( seek out used DVD stores and Half Price Books stores just to get that feeling back.

As a dad that was born in the early 80s, I find it hard to choose the right movies to show my kids. So many times I show them movies that I watched as a kid and then some scary or inappropriate part comes up that I totally forgot, giving them nightmares. Then I remember that those parts also gave me nightmares.

So now I make sure I have the remote in my hand at all times( I would pre watch the movies but I don't have the time for that like most parents)

What are your guys must see movies to show your kids?

Falling asleep to the original war of the worlds radio broadcast always brings me back to 1986 when my family was on a long road trip and my mom and 2 younger sisters were sleeping in the back of the van. My dad Knew I loved science fiction and horror so he put on a cassette tape of the radio broadcast of King Kong and the War of the Worlds and we had an amazing couple of hours together just driving and listening ❤

I lived in Twickenham in south west London until early 1999. We had a "Ritz" video not far from the Police station that had bootlegs. That card transferred to Blockbuster vdeo haha.

Yo Avgn or James anyways your videos are probably the most real and entertaining but nothing beats watching you when I was younger and wanting all the games and movie tapes you had and still do lol but this video stands out more especially with how well you describe your childhood and how it was with no internet, not gonna lie I wish that (who I call myself Nostalgia) was there with ya, I’m sure that with your cool basement it helps feel much younger again
