Home Alone (1990): 15 Weird Facts You Never Knew

Remember When | January 4, 2026

#rememberwhen Macaulay Culkin was left home alone at Christmas and it turned into a Christmas tradition? Home Alone was part slapstick battle royale, part John Hughes family heart warmer and all holiday chaos. This Christmas classic was as wild behind the scenes as it was on-screen.

In this video we’re diving into 15 weird, hilarious, and slightly unhinged facts you never knew about Home Alone. Like the fake movie that birthed “Keep the change, ya filthy animal.” The time Joe Pesci accidentally bit a child. And yes—how Kevin’s booby-trapped mansion was actually built inside a high school gym. The 35th anniversary of the Christmas movie Home Alone!

As someone who didn't grow up in a Christian country this film must've been so different for you guys than for me.
Some things, like the nativity scene there or Kevin making the sign of the cross I didn't even know about yet.

But that has nothing to do with behind the scenes stuff.

None of the home alones make sense. The big kids know what to do, why didn’t the mom take more time to attend to the younger children??? I used to babysit my 5 siblings and I wouldn’t just assume that was my sibling I had to physically see their face. And seriously as a mom she should have been in the back. It’s like those parents who say I left the burning house thinking my kids was already out of the house.

    Lyrics

    Candles in the window

    Shadows painting the ceiling

    Gazing at the fire glow

    Feeling that gingerbread feeling

    Precious moments, special people

    Happy faces, I can see

    Somewhere in my memory

    Holiday joys all around me

    Living in my memory

All of the music, all of the magic

All of the family, home here with me

    Ooh

    La la

    Candles in the window

    Shadows painting the ceiling

    Gazing at the fire glow

    Feeling that gingerbread feeling

    Precious moments, special people,

    Happy faces, I can see

    Somewhere in my memory

    Holiday joys all around me

    Living in my memory

All of the music, all of the magic

All of the family, home here with me

I watched Home Alone 1 and 2 just before Christmas. I couldn’t get through the third one. These are fascinating facts about this classic movie 🍿 I’ll never look at it the same way again.

At 4:48 what did you mean when you said that he, "screamed like he had just discovered moisturizer for the first time"? That was dumb because he was putting aftershave on his face not moisturizer. Why would moisturizer burn his face? And by the way, the comment you made about the filmmakers, "finding the most 90's solution possible" was incredibly annoying as well. Just because they didn't rely on a stupid computer to do all their work doesn't mean that is solely a "90's solution", millennial. That is how movies were done before idiotic CGI came in and ruined the film industry. Having real life stunts wasn't just a 90's thing.

We lost a huge part of what it meant to be American when we lost John Hughes. As well as John Candy. What tragic losses for cinema, but at least we have what they did 🥲
