A Guide to MASTODON

Lie Likes Music | January 1, 2026

Hey guys.

Oh boy how i enjoyed making this artist introduction! Mastodon has

been one of my favorite bands for several years. They are a sludgy

prog-metal band from Atlanta, US, with an amazing and authentic

sound that has made them very famous in the modern metal scene.

Hope you enjoy the introduction!

Mastodon are easily my favorite Progressive Metal band. Their entire discography is great, their first 4 are some of my favorite albums of all time, and their low points are at the very least good. Love this band.

Not sure how you can go from saying of their first albums that they are one of the most influential and progressive metal bands today to saying you "hate" OMATS? The whole point of being progressive is to take the music to places it hasn't been. So what if it's more "mainstream" it's still Mastodon, but to each his own I guess. I dig your channel none the less though. Cheers.

Mate, stop waffling !! Mastodon are the evolution of QOTSA ( Nick Oliveri era ) having such style mixed with perfection of pop rock / hard rock melodies . There is no correlation with them and Baroness as the latter are not too good

    AMAZING BAND

oh boy, in my opinion "once more round the sun" and "emperor of sand" are MUCH better than the albums out before. Strong pieces, no fillers, mature sound. So boy, actually a matter of taste.

I wonder how you feel about Once More Around the Sun these days, if it has grown on you or not. There are some great gems in that thing: Asleep in the Deep, Chimes at Midnight, Aunt Lisa, Halloween, Diamond in the Witch House, even Tread Lightly is a great intro.

I've been following this band since 2009, and I can honestly say that they haven't put out a single bad album. They got unjustly shat on for "selling out" after every single release post Crack the Skye, but to me that is nonsensical gate-keeping from the metal community (as is tradition). They have really refined and developed their craft from the raw aggressiveness of Remission into the distinctive Mastodon sound and feel, without sticking to any genre's restrictiveness.

You may want to check with some of the facts the drummer has the voice similar to Ozzy and the rhythm guitarist song the chorus of blood and thunder they all have song on the albums and the rhythm guitarist also had vocals on the first four albums

Hunter is for sure the most disappointing in the series. Crack the skye is far and away my favorite album ever "more so than dark side of the moon"! Very much disagree about once more around the sun. I love this album. Then again, I am a guitar player so I am bias. Over all the worst album by the band is still a good listen.

Your opinion on OMRtS is trash. Its their most psychedelic album by far. Not as progressive as CtS or Blood Mountain buts got some amazing songs. Diamond in the witch house, chimes at midnight and ember city are some great tunes.

Hey guy I just found your videos and I'm really enjoying them, they are all quite good. I've been listening to Mastodon since just before Leviathan came out when I heard "March of The Fire Ants" somewhere, then went immediately to Best Buy and bought Remission. But I don't listen to Metal as much as I use to and I never got around to listening to the last two records, so it was fun to hear your thoughts on their albums.

Also in the beginning of the video you were talking about how they each have provided vocals to some degree or another, mixing their different scream and/or clean vocals and therefor adding a variety to the vocals. Well It reminded me of a band I hadn't thought about for awhile, because one of the biggest reasons I enjoyed them was that every member provided vocals to most of their songs. They were a Progressive/Death Metal band from Canada. They had a Vocalist who provided all of their clean vocals in a kind of Iron Maiden-ish sounding way and then him and every other member would provide different kinds of Growl/Scream hard vocals. Also while having some very exceptional guitar and drums. So there is a lot going on and it's impressive how well structured and precise the songs are.

They were called "Into Eternity" and if you have not heard them before you should give a quick listen to their first three albums.

Leviathan is the best in my opinion, personally I dont understand why people think crack the Skye is their best. I understand why the band would think that though. Dont get me wrong, I fucking love crack the Skye, but I think Leviathan is the best mix of all of their elements as a band, and it even sounds like the cover (I guess they all do). And Joseph Merrick sounds like its underwater. Essential mastodon songs to me are elephant man (best), hearts alive, and sleeping giant.

Once more round the sun was a very mixed bag. Tracks like high road and ember city are some of my favorite Mastodon songs but when it sucks it sucks hard (*cough* The Motherload *cough*)

I completely agree, from an ARTISTIC perspective the early albums were very strong and I totally agree with your assessment of crack the Skye but MUSICALLY, they have gotten better and better with every album since, vocals are 100 times more dynamic, especially on emperor and cold dark place ep which is amazing imo. You can't just rinse and repeat the same style, that's not fulfilling for a musician, floyd and crimson didnt do it either. I'll also throw in radiohead, deftones and tool for comparison, very well known popular bands but every album sounds different as they evolved musically and grown over DECADES! And I'm sure your taste will too. I really hope this doesn't come across as a personal attack or anything man, I thought your reviews of animals and crack the Skye (later videos of yours) are excellent. Keep up the good work and remember the best music takes time to unravel its potential.

Like everything you had to say until you started thrashing once more round the Sun I don't want to know what you have to say about emperor of sand or the EP or cold dark place you my friend can go f*** yourself

I don't hate OMRTS. There's definitely some good songs on it but it's definitely my least favourite. The general consensus seems to be that it's better than the Hunter but I don't see it.

Ah man this is kickass i stumbled across Mastodon the exact same way I remember hearing cts for the first time and honestly kind of not liking it and i was kind of upset because it was the first band ai had discovered on my own per say , but a few more play overs and the rest is history

King of the idiots with an ear that's clogged with shitiot. Although I do agree prior to crack the sky they were a horrible Band live. Do you need to wake up and understand that Mastodon has skyrocketed passed everybody with their last three releases. I understand though, you have to be cool and like the old stuff that sounds like shit will you can't even hear Troy's voice. Once more around the Sun and Emperor of the sand are epics along with crack the sky. And Brent Hinds axe work is progressing to that of a legend. Not to mention a down-to-earth cool motherfuker! Open and empty the ears and listen Little Closer. The only band composing music better and cleaner with a sound like no one else is Tool. And in the time Mastodon has put out 4 albums, Tool hasn't damn thing musically. Hats off to Mastodon, the best technically sound metal band on the planet! Opinion

I understand why some people don't like the last albums, but I disagree. You can be kind of "mainstream" and in the same time really inventive, weird and emotional.

Strange because I found Once More Round The Sun was kind of a link between the Hunter and Crack the Skye. There's a lot of psychedelic stuff on Once More Round The Sun, and funny/weird stuff (Asleep in the deep, Aunt Lisa and Halloween for example). I know it got this "classic heavy metal" touch that is more classical, but it is mixed with weird and progressive stuff. Maybe you did not like the production ?

I think it’s pretty unfair to call once more round he sun BAD. You bring up good points about it VS the hunter, however I wouldn’t say the the songs are not well written. It’s just a different style, yet again.
