John Deere has announced more than 1500 layoffs in the last year. Deere and Case New Holland used to employ generations of union workers across the midwest. Now they’re slashing American jobs and moving to Mexico. We investigated what’s behind it — and how to bring those jobs back.

How is it that if they are getting paid 33 dollars per hour then something else is wrong if they can’t survive on that
@Nuf_Nivah
December 25, 2025 at 11:26 am
It needs to be where if it is not made in the country then you can’t be sold here for 10 years. Like how it was in the 80s

There’s enough old equipment that could be upgraded with new tech and could make American jobs

John Deer is a quintessentially evil corporation. Right to repair is just the beginning of that conversation
@ThatkidfromLA-e8z
December 25, 2025 at 11:26 am
The way John Deere treats its farmers when their tractors break down or need repairs is horrid, the fact they are crying poor is pathetic

Americans want to buy the cheapest products possible and don't care what it takes to get cheap products. So who is really to blame here?

Unions??! What?!?! I'll start a cartel tomorrow if that's what the solution is.

Why emigrate to the US when all the jobs are moving themselves to Mexico. Lol. Keep making America great baby!

Ive heard the conspiracy theories that Big CEOs & Politicians are Aliens or Reptiles, I dont believe them… but it would explain why they dont treat their workers equally since they are not human themselves. Seems pretty clear buyers should avoid Case & John Deere since why would they expect to be treated any better?

Offshoring has been happening for decades but it’s easier to blame immigrants, legal or not, than powerful corporations who lobby your favorite political party.

John Deere is a pos company. Ripping off farmers by making things harder to repair. Who tf cares about them, glad they leave

Absolutely nothing against the Mexican people, but I’ve seen these changes cause dramatic losses of overall quality. Otis Elevator started manufacturing their Elevator Controllers and other electronic control devices in Mexico. The wiring errors, mechanical errors, and overall lost time fixing factory faults in the field forced Otis to more or less start manufacturing in the US again.

I think Trump should charge every American company that uses other countries labor a 500% tarrif.

The tiered pay system has been used in unionized factories for every single major industry in N.A. for 30 years unfortunately. The existing workforce sells out the new workforce to keep what they have. These companies can't be competitive with foreign companies trying to trim their grass if they pay workers $150K-$200K to screw bolts in. There are two sides to every story. There needs to be a balanced conversation on both sides and meet in the middle somewhere. Right now its pretty disgustingly tilted towards the corporations. Very sad. Maybe tariffs is the way to go?

You can't change the greed of corporations until their hearts change and that's not likely to happen because greed is a demon spirit.

December 25, 2025 at 11:26 am
So John Deere the company infamous for screwing over farmers is Trump's fault? 😂 Ok
@Suby475
December 25, 2025 at 11:26 am
Tariffs are for the public, not the company. If prices goes up for a company they will simply up the cost to the customer.
@narcissistwhisperer
December 25, 2025 at 11:26 am
These companies will simply stop selling to the US. This is only ONE country of hundreds across the globe. They can very easily exclude America & continue business as usual.

It is greedy companies that don’t want to pay Americans decent wages so they go to mexico and pay them little to nothing to increase their profits. You can thank clinton and his nafta deal for that. Now you get inferior products cause there made by people who get paid squat.
@maxpower-r2e2y
December 25, 2025 at 11:26 am
If tariffs get cancelled. Can you use trade quotas to renegotiate NAFTA any way you like? Probably yes. But how do you capture the money difference in lost trade deficits, then? ideally, you still need pre NAFTA tariffs to restore a healthy trade balance. but john deere argues that the supreme court has no choice but to follow the existing interpretation of the tariff laws. Unless the congress may be willing to pass a new interpretation of the tariff laws, while they still have the majority.
Again, the public discontent will continue to rise unless America chooses to segment its trade war tactics into smaller pieces. Trade wars + recessions + terrorist controlled public opinion = bad idea. Segmentation is the answer.

Its not gonna happen. If you as the consumer can get something 40% cheaper for the same quality you are not gonna "buy american" and pay more for less
@ff8123
December 25, 2025 at 11:26 am
Tariffs on heavy machinery is not controversy. Tariffs on bananas, avocados, plastics, and metal is.
@Williamscomponents-lq6ti
December 25, 2025 at 11:26 am
Actually, John Deer has been ripping off American farmers for years. If you buy one, you can’t get it fixed by anyone but John Deer who over charges and makes owners wait for months which can ruin the yield of an entire crop. John Deer is COMPLETE GARBAGE!!!!!
@MrKogline
December 25, 2025 at 11:26 am
…And yet they went on strike in 2021 and got a huge bump in pay with a huge contract. It's almost like everyone here has no idea what they are talking about.

At this point, its keeping jobs and industrial capability from China. Bringing jobs back to the United States is what the administration would aim for, mostly, I believe. However, giving them to Mexico would be the best-case scenario, as this would allow for the migrant crisis to be assuaged while cutting costs on logistics and further building trade relations. TLDR; Playing Keep Away from China is the priority
@luckyguy600

nothing ran like a Deere, all the way to Mexico.
@Alejandro-s3z8o
December 25, 2025 at 11:26 am
These companies are not in touch with reality at all, it's not like workers elsewhere are not aware of the fact that they will make a fraction of the money that the same job pays here in the States.
We need to stick together and show these greedy companies what's up.
@seawolf7610
December 25, 2025 at 11:26 am
Unfortunately, American farmers are insanely loyal to the brand, so they have no incentive to change.

5 months later john deere is is still self destructive.
@FrederVision
December 25, 2025 at 11:26 am

There's a line from Theroux's 'The Mosquito Coast' that perfectly sums up Donald Trump (ironically, spoken by a farmer): "He's the worst kind of pain in the ass: a know-it-all who's sometimes right."
