Alexander Skarsgård & Stellan Skarsgård | Actors on Actors

Variety | December 23, 2025

Father and son duo Stellan Skarsgård and Alexander Skarsgård sit down to talk about their varied careers. Stellan reflects on returning to acting in ‘Sentimental Value’ after suffering a stroke, while Alexander discusses his role in the gay biker BDSM rom-com ‘Pillion.’ They also bicker about competing in the same category at the Gotham Awards, how Alexander unwillingly got his start in acting, and what it was like growing up in the “bohemian” Skarsgård household.

Stellan talking about dodging mandatory military service by pretending to be a "drug addict" smoking hash and that he might "influence other kids" is some peak 1970s Swedish drug hysteria shit.

I love when nepotism is acknowledged. The problem isn't nepotism necessarily. It's when nepo babies gaslight you about how hard it is to do something. I'm a nepo baby in a very modest industry and even I had crazy advantages. Even without connections, just having parents who know the language of your industry is a huge advantage. Getting noticed at 7 is definitely still nepotism.

Ridiculous, it seems neither of these two have ever grown up. the son is wearing shorts just for a wind up. Lucky that they are in the same business, it's an actors version of the family business. For some reason I feel like they should voice some characters for the Muppets. I feel that it would add to their understanding of each other if they were in a movie playing furry Muppets. A Swedish movie with Volvo's and Saab's where the man with the suitcase translocates into a real non CGI puppet universe.

Minute 18:00 to 21:00, Alexander is listening HARD. And, that can’t be overstated because, as children and family members, we hear so much of our loved ones’ stories, we stop listening as if there’s anything new. Often there isn’t. This moment, after 50 years of life, Alex was learning something else about his father. Loved it ❤

Someone write the script for `The Royal Skarsgårds` as the opposite of the Tenenbaums. I'd nominate von Trier as director but then the 8 spawns would end up cutting off their genitals to fill up a whole 6 feet grave with their united blood to honor their father Stellan.

The most Swedish fatherhood ever. My father is a carpenter. His father was a carpenter. I am the first to break the circle. I like music and I didn’t really have the chops to be a carpenter. I’ve always felt different from that and when I turned 14 my father bought me a bass since I’ve always felt more drawn to music and poetry more than his line of work. He still loves me even though I’ve never made it as a musician, but I followed my dreams and have a few songs under my belt as well as a career in management. But when I was young I never felt the pressure of being his son. I felt nothing but love and understanding for the path I wanted to take. That is the Swedish way.

Stellan is so cool… dude had a stroke 3 years ago and somehow has put on some of the greatest performances I've ever seen since then. This shit makes no sense but I ain't complaining.

Alexander should be careful when he says: "You're going down, old man." His Da knows his way around a torture room, thanks to his role in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo".
