What’s Causing Greenland’s Biggest Glacier to Melt? I NOVA I PBS

NOVA PBS Official | December 23, 2025

Warming ocean water is eating away at Greenland’s glaciers from below.

Jakobshavn is Greenland’s biggest glacier. And over the past 20 years, it’s receded dramatically. Play NOVA’s Polar Lab to learn what’s behind that change: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/labs/lab/polar/

In 1987 was the icesea , the northern ice above Greenland, ice free.
    All the ice was gone.
Only a few mountain tops on Greenland had some ice on them left.
The northpole has been tropical before.
The South pole was once warm too.
We come from an iceage with mammoth and wooly rhinos.
    Just 20.000 years ago.

Where was the panic in 1987 , when all the ice on the northpole was gone?
    Did Polar bears suffer?
    Do we have less seals?
It is a hoax, one of many.
Look over there, stop looking here!
    Distraction, bollocks.
    Scientists lie for money too.
Explain the ice free northpole from 1987 first, before coming paranoid.

The earth is changing and humans are play a small role in helping. Does anyone remember the age of the Dinosaurs and why the earth changed? A asteroid hit the earth which trickered earth earthquakes and volcanoes.

Geothermal activity under the ice in the Antarctic is driving melt there. It's way too cold for air temperatures to go above freezing for long. As to the melting in the Arctic. Look up Beauford Gyre. It's basically a cold climate bomb that's way overdue to release huge quantities of cold, low salinity water into the North Atlantic.
