How The Reebok Pump Changed The High-Tech Sneaker Game Forever

Weird History | December 11, 2025

When it comes to cutting-edge athletic footwear, Reebok and its competitors – Nike being the most prominent among them – have been at the forefront of industry-shaking innovations that literally change the way people wear (and buy) sneakers. But few innovations have caused a stir quite like the Reebok Pump. On its way to becoming a veritable game-changer, the Pump – introduced at the tail-end of the 1980s – featured technologies that many brands, including arch-rival Nike, had been tiptoeing around for years.

The shoe that changed sneakers for ever was whatever shoe they stopped referring to as a sneaker. I'm 51, and at no time in my life did I or my immediate peers refer to any shoes as sneakers. Calling my ratty Chuck's sneakers back in 1987 would have been a great way to get mocked endlessly.

I always wanted a pair of Pumps as a child. I couldn't have them until I was old enough to work and buy them myself. Multiple chilhood dreams were fulfilled like that.
I did had a pair of L.A. Gear Lights. They were fantastic!.

No… Los primeros y originales Reebok pump de 1989 no solo inflaban la lengüeta, también alrededor de todo el pie, a partir de los twilight zone y los omni Lite de Dee Brown es que solo dejaron el sistema pump para la lengüeta

I nor my parents could afford them when they came out, they just couldn't justify spending so much on a pair of shoes that I'd outgrow in 6 months so I had to wait 30 years to finally get a pair. Now I own two pairs soon to be three. They were well worth the wait. Everyone who sees them freaks out. People my age instantly know what they are, people who are younger don't know but ask you what they are and even kids ask me what they are and I'm happy to give them the story. When they have it explained to them they think it's the coolest thing ever and want a pair of their own. They are certainly a head turner and grabs everyone's attention wherever you go. If they know you see them smile and give you a nod. The ones who don't look down as you are walking by and ask their friends if they know what they are. It's a unique feeling. I can't tell you how many times I've been stopped by strangers in a supermarket and had a good half hour conversation with them, even in the checkout queues I've had people looking down and taking photos of them, they really stand out amongst everyone else's footwear that's for sure.

I certainly had a pair of basketball Pumps when I was a kid. LOVED THEM! Got on the condition that I finished in the top 3 in my class when it came to overall grades average. I came 1st 😁.

I had the black ones with the orange pump had my mom take me back to the mall to return them and got the David Robinson Nike pumps with the pump on the side of the shoe. Big mistake the Reebok Pumps were better

I never had a pair of pumps (my Mom bought me low-top Roos and Pumas) but of course, my little brother got a pair. But…Mom always said she never showed and preference between her kids, so I guess I gotta take her at her word…

I had a pair of “low tops” that I remember my parents paying $90 for. I loved them and wore them proudly until they started to wear out and eventually I outgrew them as well.

I remember these shoes and they were all the rage back then, but I remember a few friends who managed to pop the airpockets used (which wasn't that hard actually) and I remember them describing the experience afterwards as being "basiclly makes a farting sound when you walk" since air would get in and would expel perhaps under a bit of pressure of your foot as you walked. I always found this a bit comical and never wanted the shoes anyway (I had bought others with similar technology, but not the "pump" design but rather ones that just had pocketed air tubes in the heel, but for those, if they popped, they didn't really make any noise, or you could pop the other side so air could flow out both sides (never had the "farting" issue with the ones I had, which were New Balance with the airpockets in the heel).

Sonics high flyer Shawn Kemp actually never wears any iteration of Reebok Pump sneakers. He got his own signature Reebok shoe called the Kamikaze & Reignman series. Ditched the pump tech, and focused more on Reebok's version of air cushion on the sole, called Hexalite.
