No one is outraged at this, we are outraged they disabled it and kept ruining everything with censorship in the first place. I only paid so I could generate extreme literary erotica, and I cancelled it when they ruined it again.

The AI bubble is going to burst because of oversaturation. People are already sick of AI slop on YouTube. Also, the majority of folks are rushing to replace cognitive tasks with AI which dumbs down and makes the populace even more reliant on it. If you do what everyone else is doing, you give up your individuality and become just another peddler of machine slop. That has more downside than upside.

I think they are trying to compete with xAI's Ani and other companions. They realize that if they don't they are losing out on a potentially large user base who will pay extra for those features. Also the training data they get will position them to be the LLM/chatbot for future "companion robots." – which is likely to be a huge market.

Your analysis is basic and lacks facts. OpenAI is aware of the upcoming AI bubble and wants to spread into adult entertainment or any other industry than can generate revenue. Youtube has made a mission to eliminate adult activity to that they can maintain their position as a business video landing location and they are doing exceptionally well.
OpenAI is understanding that their future is in jeopardy and is scrambling to find new revenue sources.

Online, for all x, there are some people who are outraged about x. This doesn't mean that "the AI community" is outraged. I think you're exaggerating for views, and I fell for it. That's on me.

Surprise surprise, adults want to generate things with adult themes. A solution I saw someone suggest was to have one app for regular stuff and one app for regular stuff and NSFW. That way you don't have to bother with flagging nsfw posts, and dealing with appeals etc. it would be allowed and those that don't like NSFW could use the regular sfw version of the app. The concern about over censoring is on the image and video generators, it has been demonstrated in YouTube videos how certain models won't create the simplest most innocent things because of these censors. It's become unreasonable.

It's a pragmatic approach. If you're outraged by it, consider that it will be the lesser of many evils. If OpenAI does it, it will likely be moderate and with some guardrails. When other companies do it, it will be extreme, explicit and unleashed. If OpenAI doesn't offer at least a tamer version, users who want that experience will leave OpenAI and go elsewhere. OpenAI will die and those outraged by such content will be dealing with far worse. Think of it like controlled substances – would you rather people have access to cannabis and alcohol, or do you want people turning to hardcore drugs like cocaine, heroin, meth and fentanyl?

A lot of men today are suffering for not being able to form social circles. Not having any social support. Not saying Altman is a good guy, but AI may help some people who come from abusive family and friendships. Having a imaginary friend that can help you feel better might be useful for some people.
