Aretha Franklin is the GOAT.After her imo is Annie Lennox and Cher of course they didn't start in the nineties.I'm old.All the singers Matteo and Nick mention are also fantastic singers.Lots of talent mentioned here.

They were all kind of controlled to a degree. Janet literally put out an album called Control. Now that I’m grown up—yes, her father had influence—but the industry still had its claws in her.
Mariah was definitely controlled. And Whitney (I’m Black, so please don’t drag me)— (IMO) Whitney was always presented as this debutante when, in reality, she had a bit of a ghetto edge. Her intonation and speech weren’t the polished presentation they marketed. Celine, on the other hand, was laid back—she would even speak in slang. But Whitney was packaged as this perfect princess.
Tiffany and Debbie Gibson were also controlled to a degree. And my God, Shanice Wilson (I Love Your Smile)—they chewed her up and spit her out.

I agreed with all the icons here except for Ashley Simpson – are you serious!? 😂 I cant even recall a single one of her songs. She was NOT iconic or special imo. Sorry.

Id love to head their justification for Ashley Simpson. Are they trolling? 😂

As a 42 yr Madonna fan and collector, I can tell you, Madonna never met Janet for one and two, it was Janet who started the beef as Madonna never said anything about her.
As for the Mariah quote, I 1000% agree with her, when she stated she would rather die than sing her songs.Mariah has zero depth, social awareness or humility. To this day, she has never sang about real world issues, truly personal issues or anything that would resonate with people, it’s all ego and frothy. She’ll only be remembered as a once great voice, second to Whitney Houston.
Madonna has always admired Whitney and they have met and Whitney defended Madonna in an interview once and before her death, was filmed in a hotel bar, dancing and singing along to Madonna’s superbowl halftime show, and singing “Go Madge, Go Madge”, so they were fine.

It’s so weird to downplay Celine’s vocal abilities…she could’ve gone toe-to-toe with any of them at any moment. If she didn’t take a career break from 2000-2002 she probably would’ve sold another 30 million albums in that time. She was at the absolute top of the world by the end of the decade — so much so she and her team were worried she was oversaturated in the public’s eyes. And then she turned around to basically pioneer modern Vegas

Don't come at me but, I never thought that Madonna was that good, and I certainly wouldn't put her anywhere near the middle of a diva list. I understand the cultural phenomenon of Madonna, but that's more because of her catchy tunes, and shock value, than vocal talent.

Excellent Job Boys! I agree with both of your analysis of Divas. Thank you Matteo for Highlighting the True Icons of the ‘60’s.
All of your statements were true and relevant.
The Gen Z gays I work with think Chappell is an Icon! I’m like, Hello, she hasn’t been around a minute! So I tell them about all the True Divas

Janet is not getting enough credit here. She essentially created the '90s urban superstar female template' which then Britney, Christina, and even Whitney and Mariah later in the 90s would emulate to a degree. Also, lets not forget Barbra did her big comeback tour in 94, which was literally billed as the 'tour of the century' and redefined her as the ultimate 90s diva legend. Plus Jennifer Anniston copied her tour hair. And JLO would later create Glow inspired by that glassy 90's Barbra nude make-up look.

Mariah, Whitney, and Céline are all very commercially successful, and sort of formed the female "Holy Trinity" of the 90s… but Mariah has so many other qualities to her. Celine and Whitney are phenomenal SINGERS and performers, and their stage presence was well beyond Mariah… I think Mariah wanted to just be a singer songwriter and share her music on stage, and maybe be recognized from time to time, but she was always forced to learn choreography and put on a "show" or gimmicky act. I know everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Whitney and Celine don’t write lyrics, they freely admit that. But they’re also not just going to sing anyone’s old song… but they also don’t write their own. Mariah has a recognizable mood and style to her lyrics. And that’s besides the voice, the range, the melisma, the techniques, the transitions from head to chest voice. The lyrics, and the poetic style, are very "Mariah" if you’re a into it. If you know…you know. Lol. That’s not a JLo quote, btw. 😂 She even has songs connecting across albums as dual-storylines and trilogies! For example, Underneath the Stars/Fourth of July/The Impossible, The Roof/Lullaby, My All/After Tonight/I Only Wanted.
