Expo 86….or World Exposition 1986. I'm from Vancouver and visited Expo 3 times. It was low budget fun and despite being a local i watched The Beachcombers once…..only once.

Gibsons is not an island but is actually on the mainland (of Canada/North America). You have to take a ferry to get there as there is no road access (too mountainous and rocky)

Expo 86 was the biggest mistake Vancouver made. vancouver was a bit of a quiet beautiful secret then the world saw how freaking awesome a place it was and the secret was out. Not the average homes are near 2 million, rents are astronomical. The traffic is right at the very too for worst in NA. Yup. Right up there with LA. I now live just outside Van where even the furthest if the suburbs have become so over priced my kids my never own a home. Still an awesome place to live. Sail, golf and ski all on the same day. The golf is bonkers good.

Was this story inspiration for the Simpsons episode where Bart and friends do a road trip to the Sunsphere? Conan isn't a writer on it, but the story is too similar to be a coincidence, right?

What a fun story! The expo was in 86, and it sounded like a typical Vancouver day with the overwhelming rain and expos being closed. Beachcombers was a great show and one of the earliest series that had a main character that was Indigenous. Gibsons BC is on a peninsula that is broken from the mainland by Howe Sound to the south and
Jervis Inlet to the north. Traditional territories of the Sechelt, Squamish and Sliammon First Nation of which I am from Sliammon. Not far from Gibsons is Sechelt where a Federal Canadian and Roman Catholic Church operated an industrial residential school from 1904 to 1975. My late father was removed from his home by RCMP at 4 years old (1960) and brought to St.Augustine Indian Residential School under Federal Law and wasn’t allowed to leave until he spoke English, 15 years later. He didn’t speak English, was stripped, shaved, separated from family, and issued the number 51, of which they never used his name again. Its a miracle he survived as many of our relatives and their children did not leave the school alive. This show was being filmed while my dad was still locked in that school a mere 13 miles North of the main filming location, for perspective. RIP Dad ❤️🦅

I'm not sure why these two were so shy about who they went to visit – it must have been Robert Clothier or Relic. Relic moved to Horseshoe Bay nearby at some point to a small tiny island of about 30 houses called Eagle Island. Only accessable by boat but yeah in an area of dense housing, now just for rich people. I partied there one weekend while the owners were away – a couple of us enjoyed his son's family dog and house. Relic's pipe was in a glass case in the livingroom and it was an honour to be there and see that. My uncle Leo died in a Landcaster and Clothier was a pilot of one in the same war and seems to be well regarded, and lucky he got through to raise a family and become a Canadian icon.
Either Robert or the character Jesse played by Pat John. Pat was a local and it is a very big deal that so long ago there was this First Nation guy that everyone loved on this show we all loved. There was only one FN on screen in those days and it was Pat <unless you are talking about American cinema where most were played by Mexicans>. Pat John was the real deal, and my heart hopes he was as lovely in real life as he was on the show. Great Canadians, both.

Expo 86 was an exciting time in Vancouver but it began transforming our small and accessible city into a crowded and expensive metropolis – we're now over 3 million people jammed between those lovely mountains and beautiful harbour – we "invited the world" – and it showed up and stayed.
