There are a lot of people out there that still don't separate gender roles from gender. All you have to do is look at all the guys that have ignored my thought on what is wrong with a vehicle but when my husband, who has significantly less experience working on vehicles, comes along two minutes later and says the same thing I did almost verbatim his words are take as gospel.

Cis gender people enter the bathroom not corresponding with their gender all the time, dads that are taking their daughters to the bathroom or trying to change their baby's diaper but the men's room doesn't have a changing table. Women taking their sons to the men's room because they refuse to pee anywhere but the urinal. Heck the amount of women at busy events that have a huge que for the woman's bathroom will frequently say fuck it and just use the men's room, and occasionally I've seen men do the same. People frequently go into bathrooms that don't match their biological gender for all kinds of reasons, it wasn't a big deal then and it shouldn't be one now.

I don‘t see why a 16 year old can‘t identify as a 67 year old, or a white dude cant‘t identify as a black dude. You say sex and gender isn‘t the same thing, and that might even be true, but who is to decide that? I absolutely don‘t care about what people identify as, I‘m in no position to tell anyone what to do or not to do, but I can question the legitimacy of their claims.
Plus, don‘t be so smug about it, one can doubt something without being an asshole. I‘m just not fully convinced, but I wouldn‘t actively misgender someone.

Still confused by structuring identity around feeling. A human is so much more. I got lost in between "transgender" and "transracial" as to why one is okay (most animals are binary, with exceptions), but not the other. You're saying that "race" is more real than "biology." Are not both embedded with cultural causality? They are at least surrounded by cultural cues. I'm happy to accept people as people, and expression of individuality is the essence of the soul – but it seems to me that "identity" is adding labels, not taking them away.

Nearing three years later and people still really truly use this bathroom argument and ignore any of the evidence that trans people are in extremely high danger of being murdered, harassed, and even commit suicide. That phenomenon is irrelevant if you think those people are maliciously lying to abuse children I guess :/

Thank you for finally making me understand. I've always wanted to support transgender people and their identity, but I was getting second thoughts when I realized the possible implication of, as you mentioned, a white person identifying as a black person or vice-versa.
I'm really glad I got rid of these doubts now.

Men don't belong in women's bathroom. Transwomen are men. Learn about autogynephilia.

Well, gender isn't arbitrarily assigned. It's the best guess on the part of the doctor, and it's usually right, but of course it can be wrong sometimes. My cousin has a baby male, and she's taking the attitude that he's probably a boy but wants to create an environment in which he's safe to to come out if it turns out that he's transgender.

This is so intellectually dishonest. And sexist. Telling women that their fear of male violence is a non problem, is bloody offensive. And sexist.

IDGAF if trans people use the men's bathroom. honestly I'm hoping it will push to get rid of urinals and just give mens restrooms as many stalls as womens restrooms. seriously, I used to work at an office where the men's restroom was smaller, and had ones stall, and one urinal. the womens however, had 5 stalls AND more sinks.

I know this video was a while ago so I may not get a response which is ok, my question is in a sporting event would a transboy be allowed to participate in the men's events? purely because they have the disadvantage of being female and therefore not as physically big or strong as males. Wouldn't this make (depending on the sport) the event unfair? Do you think it would be better to split the groups into male and female rather than men and women?
(Sorry if this is too long)

I agree that the "buying alcohol" example on Fox is silly, but it does raise a valid point. How can you enforce sex based discrimination laws if gender can undermine it? Nobody, on either side, is arguing that the government doesn't have an interest in discriminating based on sex as it concerns the bathroom. You can walk into a building and one door can have a picture of a "woman" on it, and another door have a picture of a "man" on it, and you are legally required to go into the corresponding bathroom. NOBODY is saying the government has no interest in that or must stop doing that. They are just saying the government's definition of "man" and "woman" is too narrow. But if we are saying the government has an interest in sex based bathroom laws, how can it possibly carry out that interest if it can't use sex as the basis for admission???
It would be like sex based discrimination laws that punish men more for sexual crimes than women. Some states do do this. And the Supreme Court has upheld that as being a constitutionally permissible form of discrimination. Because the consequences of sex for women (pregnancy) are greater than the consequences for men. But if gender must be factored into those laws, what would EVERY criminal defendant say at trial??? "I'm not a man, I identify as a woman, therefore I dont' qualify under the law."
The only way to enforce sex based discrimination laws, is to base them on your genitals. Otherwise they are toothless.

Doesn't the existence and acceptance of transgender also require acknowledging that men and women's brains are different?
@RoseEyed
October 29, 2025 at 8:31 am
I think part of what makes this issue so "hard" to understand is that for the VAST majority of the population (a.k.a. cis people) sex and gender overlap so much that they generally can be used interchangeably. I was born with a vagina so people call me "she" and I can wear dresses, heels, and makeup without people looking at me weird. Cool.
This fact is one of the reasons why the concept of transgender confused me so much: (For example, I see breasts as a result of one's SEX, not their gender identity. Therefore if a trans female has surgery to give herself breasts, is she not hypocritically mixing the ideas of sex and gender as the same thing?) The answer I came up with after talking to people is no. But that traditional overlap is one of the things that makes this discussion so difficult.
So advocates, please try to be patient with us. We're trying to learn and we mean well; we're getting there but it takes baby steps. ^_^

Here's my opinion. I believe that everything that has to do with a persons safety should be based on factual documents like legal gender markers on birth certificates ,drivers licenses, & other identification. Many states require sex reassignment surgery to change their gender marker & I think it should be all states. And with that being said there should always be a 3rd bathroom option for trans people who haven't gotten surgery or don't plan to. Here's why: let's say a man walks into a target woman's room & later the woman says he raped her. All he has to say is he is trans & the woman will no longer have much of a case. BUT if we go back to what I was saying about the 3rd bathroom option, she would have a case. If the mans license says male that means his options would be mens room or if that made him feel uncomfortable he would have the 3rd bathroom option. I support the trans community & feel that would be the be the best option for everyone's safety. Let me know if you disagree.

The thing you said about race not being identity (as such) reminded me of two things.
A few years ago I read a news article about a Black family that had a white baby, through both parents having some recessive genes that had not been apparent in them or their other children. Even more years ago I saw a Black man on Dr Phil who had been adopted by white parents who gaslit him into thinking he was white. (I suppose he relegated the matter to his SEP-field.)
Obviously those are unique situations, but their self-concepts would be affected by it.

Good video. What a lot of people who are anti-trans don't realize is that there is medical and scientific research showing that foetuses can be exposed to hormones that can make them appear a different gender (for example a female foetus can be exposed to male hormones so will be born with a male body) and that brain scans show that trans people's brains are more similar to the gender that they identify with than the gender they were assigned to at birth (ie. trans women's brains are similar to female brains rather than male). A transgender person is just a person born in the wrong body. This doesn't make a person deviant or stranger or any less worth of respect than anyone else. Being born in the wrong body shouldn't give you any less rights as a man or woman than being born disabled should give you less rights.
@SuperHuia
October 29, 2025 at 8:31 am
interesting. But no one is born to any race at birth either /No races exist remember….so perhaps a 'race' identity is a matter of how one identifies with others around them.

"Gender Identity" doesn't make sense. What does it "feel like" to be a woman or a man? That suggests that there is some intrinsic male qualities or female qualities rooted in the biology of your brain, which may or may not be so, but if it is so, then how could you say that it isn't rooted in biology? If there is a way to feel like a man or feel like a woman, then that means that there is a definitive "man" and a definitive "woman" to be able to feel like one. But then people say that there is no definitive man or woman, and its all just fluid and whatever you "feel" like. It's bonkers and contradictory. I don't "feel" like a man, I just am one. Gender isn't just "assigned arbitrarily," it is based on sex, which is usually very obviously identified at birth. You can "identify" as whatever gender you want, but it is based on your sex (not arbitrary), which is completely sensible, and no matter what you say or how you feel, you are still that sex and you always will be no matter what you do.

There is a 52 year old male in Canada who identifies as a 6 year old girl. From the look of the documentary she was featured on, age-identity is something we need to now be aware of and respect. Are we in an "anything goes" society now? Can I legitimately claim to identify as an attack helicopter? How do we tell the difference between being different, being mentally ill, and being really dedicated to a joke, like I assume registered Pastafarians are?
You spoke a bit about not being able to identify as a different race or a different age, so it seems like you have a method for navigating the social climate.
Edit: Man to male, some grammar.

I've traveled across the US and seen many establishments and bars that have a single exposed toilet (no stalls) and a communal PEE TROUGH, can't wait to see these "men" whip out their clits and use that…

I think the real hang up for most people comes from the example of trans people who will change their gender daily based on how they feel at any given time. The gender fluid argument. Today I feel more male, tomorrow I feel more female, etc. I can more or less understand if someone is perhaps born with less or more grey matter, and less or more biologically gender accurate features, living a life of feeling like they are perhaps not the gender according to their genitals. That argument matches what I believe to be a fairly scientific breakdown.
But what about the fluid, back and forth types? I have a difficult time putting myself in that perspective, unless I imagine that they exist on the exact line of grey matter and biological gender traits, to the point where they are teetering back and forth on the tip of a needle.
But I never hear it explained this way. It's always based on feeling, which is not scientific at all. In fact, I never hear much science in general, though I know it exists to "prove" both arguments. Maybe that is on purpose, since articles can be countered with yet more articles. I find it hard to believe anyone can sit down and say definitively they know the answer. People who think yes, and people who think know both have a right to feel that way.
The bathroom issue was best left to a grey area, because if you want test pushing these things through the legal system, it will have to stand up to tough scrutiny that feelings alone will not account for. No one wants to see people oppressed, or feel like they are oppressed, but if you want your condition, or your state, or your inner feeling to be legally represented, it needs to be exactly that, legally represented, and not left to something metaphysical or intangible like feeling.
I feel for the transgender people out there who constantly have to be reminded that they have the opposite genitalia then they feel they should have. But I also feel for them that they are often convinced in to taking weird hormones to try and balance themselves out by doctors no less, rather than maybe, perhaps, accepting that life is fucking crazy, and sometimes you have to bow to the absurd. I don't know what favours we are doing for people by not being honest with them.
It is okay to feel female and be a male. It is okay to feel male but be a female. It is okay to be masculine. It is okay to feminine. But is it okay to think you are something you are not? Is it okay to tell someone they are something that they are not? That's where we are in this discussion. And both sides will not soon agree if the discussion is constantly going to have to put someone out. We can't even discuss this stuff without the finger of accusation.
Seems like a lot is riding on people getting past that, and being able to start talking about it openly without emotion.

I am 100% for respecting transpeople. So I would always use their preferred pronoun, new name, etc. However: biological Sex is a real thing, while gender is a made up social construct. It is sad that we live in a society that makes gender non conforming people feel like they need to transition in order to survive. which they shouldn't need to. Just because a little girl likes short hair and playing in the mud – doesn't mean she needs hormone therapy. because having short hair and doing masculine things shouldn't be a male only permissable activity. are there people who need gender reassignment surgery to live better – I think so. But it does worry me when parents give minors hormone therapy for being gender non conforming or for being gay. again gender is a made up thing. so if we lived on a society that fully accepted homosexuality, bisexuality and gender non conforming behaviour – I think there'd be very few transpeople.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this prominent issue. I disagree with your race identification thoughts however. It is the same issue we are dealing with here; no difference. A person can be biologically classified as one thing, and feel totally the opposite; whether considering gender OR race. "As a man thinketh, so is he".

My stance on this subject all along has been: How fucking long are you in a public restroom weekly, monthly or yearly that you need to know the gender of who is peeing in the stall next to you or even have time to notice? I try to avoid public restrooms like the plague but when I do I'm in and out as fast as humanly possible. They are disgusting places, the number of gross ones I've seen vs clean is overwhelming…and I'm a female! My larger concern is the people who I notice do NOT wash their fucking hands when they leave the bathroom! You're nasty! Especially at a restaurant! Seriously? EW!

As some commenters have said, I think a lot of the controversy here stems from people resisting change and digging their heels into the ground like little bigoted saplings. It boggles the mind because even a short glance at history will tell you the direction this is going. Oh no, segregation is over?! Think of all the shit we'll have to change! Oh man, women can vote now?! Think of all the shit we'll have to change! But shit changes. That's how any society worth its salt evolves over time. That's progress–it's slow, it's painful, and it works.

This was a great video. I consider myself to be a very open mined and empathetic person but lately I've struggled to get my head around the whole 'transgender' thing. This video was very helpful and I'll watch it again any time I feel myself becoming less sympathetic to the trans community. I might not like my body but at least I know I'm in the right one so I can hardly imagine what it must be like to feel like you are in the wrong one.
