Idk who needs to hear this, but garbage island is not literally an island made of garbage. The oceanic gyres collect waste, but the waste is degraded plastics called microplastics. These are plastic particles less than .3 mm in length so they are essentially imperceptible in the ocean. These plastics constitute a staggering amount of ocean pollution and they circulate at all layers of depth. We still don't know much about the plastic or its effects.

like yes jeff we could. but it would cost more than you would want to spend and it would need so much infrastructure. most of the time these solutions are easy but we don’t have the infrastructure

Pre 2017: I was a depressed, lonely Doomer who was stuck in a pit of nihilism and misanthropy caused by humanity's inability to save themselves from their own actions. There didn't seem to be any way a single person could make a difference in our screwed up society so I gave up on the world and locked myself into my bedroom all day playing video games and watching youtube, counting down the days I wouldn't have to live in this world anymore. No hopes. No goals. Just the bitter aftertaste of this life to remind me that I was even alive. "Be the change you want to see" was just something I would say to keep following my own code of ethics but I didn't believe it made any difference, no matter how much I helped others. In the end, I just did it so I could have a slight bit of hope in this world that something could be better. The only futures I could imagine for myself were ending my own life or apocalypse fantasy, and it's obvious which one was more likely.

Post 2017: I'm still a depressed Doomer but I finally have a path I can take to actually have a chance to change the world, even if it will be too little, too late. At least we can get the recovery done right and put humanity on the right track to earn the title "enlightened being." We can actually make a difference with permaculture even if we can't actually make our own food forests. It may be a struggle to convince anyone around me to listen but at least now I actually have a reason to fight instead of a million reasons to give up. And that's all a lot of us really need, just a good reason to stand up and fight. This is that reason everyone has been waiting for the last 100 years. We can do this, together. We got this.

If anyone feels inspired to actually change the world, look into permaculture and urban food forests. Replace the waste of space and money we call lawns with productive plants. We can secure a basic standard of living for each other, ourselves, in our own communities. We can fight climate change on an individual level. We can create a future that is not only sustainable but regenerative. We can give every person the true meaning of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." All it takes is one small step. Go plant a few fruit trees, berry bushes or a garden.

I'm not sure which generation they're referring to that's apathetic, but I feel like the most recent generations are like, the most concerned about climate change?? Aren't there a higher percentage of teens to 30 year olds that are in climate science and are climate activists than ever before?

I am only at minute 25 now so you might talk about it later. But you said that our generation was so apathetic to this issue and you were hypothetically talking about radical action against CO2 heavy industry by radical activists. This is already happening in Europe with Extinction Rebellion, Ende Gelände etc. Fridays for future is the biggest youth and mass movement in general in decades in Central Europe and Skandinavia. Our generation is absolutely not apathetic to climate change and we are actively organising to fight it!

I don’t know who this cohost is, but I’m afraid he didn’t contribute much of value. Maybe this just wasn’t the right topic for him. I dunno. I’m sure he’ll get better.

i’m so terrified for our future. i cant do this anymore, some people don’t even BELIEVE in climate change. it’s gotten so bad to the point where i’m scared every time it rains, or everytime it’s not sunny and clear outside. i can’t do this anymore. i’m so tired. why don’t big corporations care ???
i also get scared everytime the wind picks up slightly. i don’t know,,, i don’t know this is so terrifying, i’m only 14, i don’t know what to do.

Can we just stop drinking milk and eating beef? Can we all just agree on this one BIG environmental issue? I can cut out ONE animal from my daily consumption, our planet and the animal, quite frankly, deserves it.

this is utter bullshit, why would you focus on what the middle class consume, when it is clear to see that over 70% of harmful emissions are done by only 100 companies on earth.

The elites on this planet are wasting the most, polluting the most, and are using the most.
its a shame you didnt bring that up, becuase middle and working class are not the ones to blame, and shouldnt feel guilty about any of this bullshit.

and there is no revolution or law that could change the inevitable, we are fucked beyond our comprehensions

He doesn't promote his music enough y'all. Listen to the new album "Children's Book" by Housecat. It's reminiscent of Slaughter Beach, Dog or earlier Peach Pitt. 5/5 Album, and let it be known that I'm very impartial to if it does well. I just genuinely think it's good music!!

The only thing that will save us at this point is going "green". Not painted green, glowing green (technically Uranium glows blue but you get the idea).

Is our generation more apathetic then any previous generation? Of course we do have this ecoanxiety that you made excellent points about… but past generations dealt with threats of MAD, fucking "real" witches , and even an unknowingness of how anything in the world works if you go back far enough. If our generation really is more apathetic, i wonder what the other factors are that brought us to this point. Or alternatively are we just at an age (early to mid 20s) where we, ourselves, become more realistic about the world around us, thus making us rather sad and detached? If anyone has any ideas about these postulations, Id love to chat about them. 🙂

was kinda hoping for an uplifting silver lining – especially as I just looked thru pics of Siberia, Turkey, Greece & Italy burning in unprecedented heat. But that's okay.. I'll make up my own silver lining. Later. Meanwhile – wonder what the chances are of a virulent variant of Yersinia pestis emerging from thawed permafrost? But the ultimate harbinger of doom is the reality that as things get worse – instead of being humble & changing our ways, most people are seeing the chaos as confirmation of their religious narratives.
