Classic Album Review | October 28, 2025

Axl Rose’s vocal issues have been the main talking point over the last couple of days after Guns ‘n’ Roses perform at Glastonbury. But.. what really happened?

June 1988. How odd memory is because I can remember my first exposure to GNR – the 'Sweet Child O Mine' video (on a tiny TV) – !!! – It landed with a loud impression and I can still see it in my mind's eye to this day in the same way I can still see 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' for the first time (those videos left a scar). And then, suddenly, every large hair poof was destroyed. It was amazing to be in the presence of a change in popular music happening right in front of you. Memory lies, but it seemed like every metal band in the world was selling cheap hair products on street corners… But look carefully, Axel's hair was teased VERY high in that 'Welcome To The Jungle' video. It was fun to watch and I thought they might go far, but by the time that weird video featuring Axel swimming with dolphins came out I knew it was over. It's funny now watching my son-in-law become obsessed with GNR. He constantly asks me for memories and I can barely remember the song titles. It was a Monster, but it could have been a BEAST.

As one of the sound techs/ consultant for pyramid when guns and roses performed They sounded fantastic in the field but streaming was the main big issue that's why I have a big issue with streaming

If Kurt Cobain was alive today he would 100% be singing completely different, it's impossible to sing with that rasp ,screams and anger as you get older as its a forced voice its not natural, same as Gallagher, lennon, Dylan all forced voices

What happened? Sure the TV feed didn’t sound so great, but if you watched the audience, they were clearly having the time of their lives, despite some biased reviews I read that got all sorts of facts wrong.

I was at the Hyde Park show and he was as phenomenal as every time I've seen him admittedly 2017 was the best I've seen him.. and 2022 at Tottenham the worst.. but Hyde park was easily second best

I recently saw Pantera (with Metallica). Pantera played an octive or two lower than the originals for Phil but it wasn't really noticable. They still killed (Zakk Wylde will never compare to dime but he did his own thing).

From the videos I've seen axel sounds terrible.. he is dropping a whole lot more than an octive or two).

They are coming to my city soon.. still not sure if i want to go.

PS Metallica sounded damn good for their age also but Hetfield isn't trying to hit the notes Axel is known for.

I thought they were great at Glastonbury , Axl sounded fine consider his age , he’s not going to sound like illusion and appetite days I don’t expect it. , I’m a critic but thought they were amazing at Glastonbury. In fact incredible

You are spot on about Paul Rodgers; he is smooth and he can still belt out the hard rockers
Axel on the other hand sings horrible and has for years. Perhaps a bit of payback for being such a douche to interviewers for decades.
Continued success to you and your channel.

It's not uncommon these days for the microphone troubles on stage for many artists not just GNFRs front man Axl .. and Axl has addressed his vocal limitations (age not helping) .. but once the microphone issues were resolved at other live performances back in 2022 his vocals regained substantial clarity.. a personal thought is there never used to be thousands upon thousands of mobile phones at rock concerts and now a days they cannot be prized from people's hands – so it seems likely interference may also contribute to audio problems in both static and drop out relating problems.. as far as what 'you' define as 'having to be in the mood for' .. true GNFRs fans would shake that comment off with little hesitation and perhaps you favor other bands after all music is subjective .. just because you need to be in a certain mood to listen to it doesn't mean all fans and listeners feel the same. But on a vocal front it could be alot worse ..he could sound like Wes from Puddle of Mudd who's voice clearly seems alot worse for ware these days.. I have confidence in Axl .. and am sure once on stage tech has been upgraded or installed/tweaked correctly there will be less to complain about. I hope Axl sees this comment and takes the good from it. I've enjoyed listening to them since 1994 and saw him live for the first time in 2022 .. and once the audio equipment had been fixed he delivered nothing but excellence m/

Seen them last summer in Dublin and it was by far their best performance since Slash and Duff rejoined. Apart from Absurd and Hard Skool, they were perfect. They were so good that their next gigs in London needed to be shortened and they cancelled their Glasgow gig….sorry about that one, lads 😉 Axl's in his 60's now and all that travelling and performing is bound to take its toll. The lad's been at it for 40 years now. A bad gig is bound to happen now and again. All I know is that the next time they roll back around this neck of the woods I'll be there ✌️

I saw ‘New G’n’R’ 4 times, and I can say I was far more impressed them than the reunited version. They managed to play tight with all the bits you wanted and some innovation, and moved around to be visually interesting. I actually think Slash has got a bit sloppy and his guitar was too loud in the mix at Glastonbury- not that that excuses Axl’s diminished vocals.

They really were bad. They’ve blamed the BBC for poor sound quality but I was in the crowd. The band sounded amazing, Axl ruined it for them. He was an embarrassment. The fact he’s blamed everyone but himself speaks volumes. Time for him to retire.

I seen guns n' Roses at Hyde Park after the Glastonbury performance and I thought they were very good I've been to loads of live shows I've been to live shows I'm 58 years old and I know

Apart from sound issues (did nobody run checks on it??), the most frustrating part of the whole spectacle was that the 'fixes' are so straightforward – 1) Employ a couple of specialist backing vocalists and/or 2) Drop the key of the song a semitone or two and/or 3) Swap the second guitar for an acoustic.

I saw what was known as New GNR in about 2006ish. Axl had the cornrows and I couldn't tell who he had in the band at that time, but his voice then was still fuckin amazing.
I can't watch them now, it just makes me sad

I saw them today in Weert Netherlands.
He is old and so is his voice, but he put in all the heart and effort he could find.
    So stop wining.
They can't all be Steven Tyler.
Get over it and show some respect…

i’ve seen them a few days ago in frankfurt and i must say the live recordings don’t really do him justice. live he just sounds better than on youtube or on the tv i had a lot of fun there

Ok axels voice aint what it was but that bbc coverage did them no favours. Last saw them at downlaod 2018 and i enjoyed them and axel seemed to enjoy it too. Its not 1988 anymore!

Old man screams too much profanity for these times. I’d wager only reason you could hear him to any degree on certain numbers at times on the TV mix was through the guitar pickups
