Have They Always Sucked?

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | October 14, 2025

It’s time to make amends.
In the past on this channel, when I have spoken about the Red Hot Chili Peppers I ruffled some feathers and received some backlash from the RHCP fans. Today, I’m going to try and say some nice things about a song that I think most people quite enjoy, it’s “Give It Away”. Are you a fan?

I can count the number of rhcp songs I like on one hand. Under the Bridge, my friends, by the way, scar tissue, breaking the girl, soul to squeeze, I know that's six. Those six songs are all timeless and really well done.

RHCP, seems like a band you should love. But I hate all their music. And them pretty much. Especially flea. fucking hate slap bass. I need to be naked and slap the bass. Please, just dont.

I can't say I was ever a huge fan of them, but perhaps that has more to do with the people who enjoyed that music around me were all dickheads, so my experiences with them have ruined Red Hot Chili Peppers for me.
I apologize to the band members, it's not your fault.

I agree the last albums with Frusciante are trash, however you are also only playing their "hits."
Listen to the guitar on "I could have lied."
Listen to " Breaking the girl."
    Listen to "Funky Monks"

Frusciante's guitar work on this album was spectacular. A solid 10 out of 10, imo. Yeah, he can be a bit hacky sometimes, but I think his work on this album in particular was next level.

Justin’s opinion on JF is one of the only times I’ve really thought he’s just way off base. I’m not much of an RHCP fan, but I am a massive JF fan. I spent most of my 20’s playing 50’s inspired straight rock n roll, so I get where Justin is coming from – to a point. Sometimes I think he’s just trolling for clicks because his lack of knowledge and the examples he uses – it would be like if we looked only at Justin’s one true hit and said, well clearly this guy is one of the least original guitar players to ever achieve success. Nothing about it is even remotely original, it sounds like what Chat-GPT would spit out of you typed in “give me a cheeky glam-revival rock song” “his solo’s are the rock n roll equivalent of canned laughter” well that sums up Justin’s playing. Except, anyone who’s stayed with the Darkness knows that’s not true. Judging JF by Dani California and Californication (though the latter is much better musically than he gives it credit for) is ludicrous. It’s so funny too, in another video he actually takes the time to point out how “not jealous” he is. Yeeeeeahhh, that’s totally something people who aren’t jealous do, take the time to explain that because you aren’t jealous of someone even more popular, you couldn’t possibly be jealous of him! Hahaha fuck, this sounds like an utter shit on Justin diatribe, and it is a bit, but I still love him.

I agree with most of this, but I do dig Mothers Milk and all their previous albums. Particularly “Freaky Styley”, which was produced by legend George Clinton. They have become quite annoying tho.

I'm a blood sugar sex magic fan. To this day I see it as a masterpiece, but everything they have done after just sucks, to me. I think they're all good musos, the ones that play instruments, but together just suck

90s RHCP and Californication and on rhcp are 2 entirely different bands. The old school rhcp were a force to be reckoned with… Fast, agreesive and in your face with insane amounts of groove and amazing amazing, inspired arrangements.

Modern time rhcp are just stale and at times just flat out bad…

I was a big fan for their first three records freaky styley uplift mofo party plan Red Hot chili peppers even mother's milk. But they've taken themselves too seriously. Anthony kiedis is the worst singer ever. JF write can write and play his own music that's about it.
