I think fingerprints exist to improve our grip. Think about it: every animal that has fingerprints uses their hands and needs to grip stuff. Granted, it's only apes and koalas, but still.

I think that slime mould has genetics like an algorithm for finding food etc. kind of like a maze solving algorithm. takes multiple paths then chooses shortest one.

What do you mean we don't know what the purpose of fingerprints? Imagine grabbing anything with sweaty hands. Duh!

Fingerprints help with grip in wet conditions. Most likely to help early humans grab trapped fish, wash smooth fruit etc.
You should really read more than one outdated study.

Animals know where to go during migration, or at least birds, because they can feel and see the magnetic field of earth

yes you were probably the only person who thought only old people got it. yes. it is NOT spelled old timers. when I was young, I read the term, not just heard it. You know, it's called reading. They even taught about it in health class in freaking middle school in my day. Late last century. IT only goes to show how bad the education system has gotten in the US in the last number of years.

Title should technically be "common things scientists can't agree on an explanation of" since there are many explanations for each of these, there just isn't unanimous scientific consensus on any of them

Fingerprints give us better grip. I've got a section of one finger that's been badly damaged and it healed without a fingerprint in that space. Anything glass I pick up with that part of my hand I can feel slide against that spot.
