Why “Buy one, get one free” isn’t a great deal

Vox | September 28, 2025

For a thrifty shopper, a “Buy one, get one” (BOGO) deal can sound like the best way to get more bang for their buck. But the appeal of BOGO is why it’s hard for consumers to see it for what it is.

BOGO is meant to get you to spend more money, not less. The deal disguises the fact that, unless you already intended to buy two items, it really isn’t all that big a discount.

The Goods by Vox explains what we buy, why we buy it, and why it matters.

At Publix, they have bogo's that are actually really good. I usually get those King Cone ice cream things, and they have a bogo… save me up to $10 depending on the servings size of the box I get. I buy the bigger box for $10, and I get another $10 worth. I was gonna buy it anyways so awesome deal.

Bruh. So you got shorty promotion and now apply it to everything? Some companies just have products which has close expiration date or were in a storage for too long and they give it up in such deals 🙄

In India you have something called MRP which is the maximum retail price. A retailer cannot sell anything above that price. So say if you're buying say something for 799, even in a BOGO which happens annually or twice a year it will be two items for 799. Mostly all of our items are inclusive of taxes, so the consumer doesn't have to worry about them. The price that you see on the website/or in supermarkets is the price that you pay.

Video didn't prove it is mot a good deal. Just that it is possibly not as good as advertised.

Saying you buy more than intended is not the same as saying the deal you are getting is no good

I really only pay any attention to BOGO in food stores. We have a chain called Publix and I also have access to Aldi and Sam's Club/BJs. I can get a better deal on LaCroix when it's BOGO at Publix than by buying a case at Sam's Club, and I get more selection options. If I don't want to take a trip to Aldi I can usually get close to the same price per loaf of bread on a BOGO at Publix. It's all a matter of running the mental calculations in your head. I have the price of my shopping cart wherever I go within a few percentage points, and so often I go to Publix and get a buy one get it free when they failed to post the correct prices. (If it's not alcohol Publix gives you any items mispriced free.)

I always love your videos! I just wanted to encourage you to look up the incredible benefits to an unborn baby when Mama eats several servings of freshly milled flour products every day 🙂 Sue Beckers podcast has so many incredible testimonies, as does Sue Becker herself, about how strong and incredibly healthy the newborn is when you eat 3-5 servings a day. Infants lifting their heads right away, better immune systems, etc. It's pretty amazing!

It's bad they lie to us but i have no sympathy or interest in a person that has the time or energy to sue a fast food company or go on a crusade about fast food pricing etc. I watched a video about a woman who was on a crusade against Family Dollar, it may be legitimate but do you not have anything else to do.

This is a very one-sided angle. If you grow up in a big family, you save a ton getting more than one of something. Imagine trying to buy for eight kids and finding a Bogo deal so you only have to buy four of the thing. My sister is my same size and clothes, so if we find a Bogo sale, we go together. The whole premise of this video is assuming that no one would want two of something. But if it’s something you could actually use two of like toilet paper packs or cans of stew, it’s very worth it. Or you can get two of something you already wanted and keep the other one to sell or give away.

In Sweden we have something called 30 day price. The seller has to disclose the lowest price during the latest 30 days. If they don’t, the risk a ticket for 4% of yearly revenue. You also can’t have the same discount for more than 30 days. After 30 days it becomes the normal list price.

Well we had triple choco donuts in nearby market, usual price $1.45, on a discount $0.75, thing was on all baked goods there was 30% discount calculated from the original price so $0.25 for one, I was looked at when I was bringing full bags of donuts. But got an amazing deal. They cancelled discount two days later.

This video doesn’t make sense 2:09 ok you spend 20% more but now you have 2 sweaters, saving $80 vs $16, hello?

2:32 wow who would’ve guessed that if you buy more stuff = you spend more money 😂 what even is this video?

Consumers aren’t sold on “free” consumers aren’t also supposed to do the math. This simply should be re titled how consumers money is stolen and why you should never vote for Trump or republicans who want the consumer protection agency gone who’s supposed to protect consumers from thief’s

It's not a good deal only when they lie about it, like you did with the title. Buy one, get one free is a 50% discount, so given no lies involved, it is a very good one.

surely the whole burger king example is illegal right? you cant just start changing the original price of things based on whether or not you have a coupon……right?
