The Bug Creek Pack: largest pack of 2022

The Bug Creek Pack was the largest wolf pack in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem this past winter with 8 pack members. You can see the whole pack in the sequence below from April 11. The breeding female is clearly very pregnant at this time—and also a particularly striking individual.

We are not sure how many pups the pack had this spring. We had one wolf collared in the pack, Wolf P1T, this spring (5th wolf in the video). However, P1T left the pack shortly after this video and we had no way to know where the pack was denning.

Fortunately, we were able to collar two wolves in this pack this summer: the breeding male (Wolf B5E) and a subordinate wolf (Wolf B2L). We should get great data on the habits of this pack for the rest of this year and hopefully next as well, especially from the breeding male.

We suspect Wolf B2L will probably be hitting the open road soon as he has been a “floater” this summer. By that we mean he appears only loosely associated with the Bug Creek pack and territory. Although B2L has remained in the general vicinity of the Bug Creek territory, he has spent substantial time outside or on the edge of the territory.

He has also made several multi-day trips away from of the general area of the territory. These trips are called “extra-territorial forays” and are not uncommon for wolves that might disperse soon. Biologists think these brief forays allow wolves to gain information on “what is available” beyond their territories before they actually decide to disperse.

B2L has also spent little-to-no time at the pack’s den or rendezvous sites. Another good indication he might be leaving soon. We have seen this kind of behavior from other younger subordinate wolves before they end up dispersing.

All this to say, the Bug Creek Pack has lost and likely will lose additional pack members this year. But at the same time the pack has almost certainly added some young members (pups) as well! We are still trying to figure out how many pups might be alive in the pack right now.

    If B2L leaves, will he try to establish his own pack? Hopefully the Bug creek pack has many healthy pups! Excited to see what you all find out!

    Thank you for detailed information. Really helps get a FULL idea of everything going on. It’s very easy to get lost in the BEAUTY of these animals; and not be aware of their complex lives.

    Thank you guys for all the hard work you do. I can't believe this channel doesn't have more subscribers ( I know this is not your goal) I would think that everybody would want to watch the journey of a wolf pack! ❤️🐺
