The flood of the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem in 2022
Here is a little trivia question: How does a wee little trail camera on the edge of a massive lake survive a historic flood? Answer: It doesn’t.
And that is a real bummer!
This spring and early summer, we had crazy flooding in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem with water levels in many of the major lakes reaching or surpassing historic flood levels. It was pretty crazy to observe and the flooding caused a lot of damage.
We had a few trail cameras near or along lakeshores that got completely submerged with the rising lake levels. E.g. the camera that captured this footage was submerged shortly after May 15 and isn’t operational anymore.
One camera was set-up on a large downed tree on a sandy beach. Neither the log or our camera are there anymore. The flood waters picked up the tree with our camera attached and floated it somewhere else in the lake.
So if you find a random log with a camera on it along the shore of Lake Kabetogama let us know! The camera is almost certainly dead but we might be able to download the footage!

This video compilation of the flooding stages from this Spring is neat!!
My fiance works as a hydrologist for the State of Minnesota and we both heard just how much flooding there was up in the BWCA (a lot of snow will do that) and that a few of his colleagues in the northern part of the state had to do a lot more field work.
He sometimes helped them monitor flooding in their "southern" sites south of Duluth this year as they had to spend a lot more time getting water data from rivers and streams in the Arrowhead. It makes scenic driving but some very long days! 😂
