In the UK, Come on Eileen is in that special class of songs that's simultaneously an unimpeachable classic pop hit and also a song you only hear played at wedding receptions when everyone is wankered enough to dance to anything.

For the longest time, I thought this song was about a stripper at a bar.

One hit wonder – so you are forgetting their first number 1 in 1980 'Geno'
Not to mention all the other top 20 singles they had from 80-86

To me, this song has always been about how they got stuck in a life they never wanted – even though they were bright-eyed, optimistic and determined to be different than their parents – because Eileen is pregnant at the end of the song.. and I love the song even more because of it😊

I was at a wedding disco in the 90s where this went down so well that the crowd howled for the DJ to play it again when it finished, so he did.

I remember "Come on Eileen" as a pleasant and catchy song ruined by a video providing a thorough examination of Kevin Rowland's armpits. Instant turn-off.

Hardly a one hit wonder, Dexy's had plenty. Oh, and the singing style is from, well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzIAiyxS-nk not only that but in later tracks he doesn't use that style exclusively.

Are there any more British bands with a name that pretty much means meth head? Apart from Dexys an Motörhead that is.

So crazy to me. They should have been one of the decade defining bands I think, they had the talent. it's funny how shit doesn't work out sometimes

Like them or not, most 80s hits sound dated. However, "Come On Eileen" is timeless.

This songs lyrics just get nicer and nicer the closer you look. Its not a real person, maybe. But theres something nice about being moved by how much you like someone that you're actually shy and weird about it

I loved them in the 80;s and still do, the instruments and vocals was EPIC.I really think them talented. I am Irish and have a Fiddle fetish THOUGH!

This guy manages to unironically merge two opposing types of annoying Americans in one person: the parochial blowhard who thinks anything that's not 'Murican is weird and Martian and yucky and the wokester who thinks everything is 'problematic'.

Had no idea about the Gino Washington connection. I almost got to see Gino live in NY a few years back but he backed out of the show at the last minute.
Guess I shouldn't have been surprised, it's pretty well known Gino is a Coward.
Ok look none of you got that joke but when I said that to Mick Collins he chuckled appreciatively, I'll have you know.

This song and band were a huge inspiration in the 90s/00s indie boom. Wolf Parade and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah definitely copied the vocal stylings wholesale.

It's an incredibly uplifting song about how depressingly miserable England was. Sums us up.

I heard in a documentary on the British program Top of the Pops about the 'Jocky Wilson' thing during a Top of the Pops episode in the autumn of '82 which caused them to fall out of favor with the TotP boss. This meant that as a band you were asked less often. What happened? Dexy's showed a portrait of darts champion Jocky Wilson during their performance of "Jacky Wilson Said" but the boss of TotP didn't see the joke and therefore the band would have been asked less often and received less airplay.

They were hardly a one hit wonder. Geno. Jackie Wilson Said.
Having said that, Come on Eileen has been in my top ten for 50 years. Possibly my favourite song of all time. I really doubt that will ever change.

Dexy's are truly awful … pretentious and irritating..
Their previous song Geno was a good song, the rest is trash. …the kind of music to virtue signal to, music that people with no personality attach themselves to.
Kevin is a pratt.
