Munson Medical Center handles influx of 11 Walmart stabbing victims with swift response
Munson Medical Center faced an unexpected challenge on Saturday when 11 stabbing victims from the Walmart incident arrived in quick succession, testing the facility’s readiness and response capabilities.
Dr. Thomas Schermerhorn, Munson’s chief medical officer, emphasized the importance of the team’s expertise and quick actions during the crisis.
“Without the expertise, efforts, and actions taken Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening, Sunday morning, we could be having a very, very different conversation today,” said Dr. Schermerhorn.
The victims were triaged upon arrival, with six in critical condition and five in serious condition.
“The initial triage assessment of the 11 patients, six patients presented in what we deemed critical condition and five patients in serious condition,” said Hurshe.
Munson Medical Center, a level two trauma center, was prepared for such emergencies, according to Joe Hurshe, the center’s president and CEO.
“The medical center is equipped to handle just about anything that we’re to develop within the community. We have trauma surgeons and care team members available on site 24/7 per the requirements of our trauma accreditation,” said Hurshe.
Despite the severity of the situation, Schermerhorn noted the swift response from the medical staff. “I did not have to place a call to call a team member in. They came in. We have a culture of what can I do? How can I help? And we saw the result of that on Saturday,” said Dr. Schermerhorn.

Kudos to the medical professionals who are trained and prepared to handle such tragedies! I am a retired psych nurse. I spent 10 years working in a state psychiatric facility, caring for patients just like this man. Before this tragedy, this man had already been declared incompetent to stand trial. Unfortunately, his family and many other families are living with this tragic reality. This man's brother (reference to another video) understands that his loved one is gravely disabled – unable to care for himself, a danger to himself and others. Sadly, there are very few locked facilities remaining, where the mentally incompetent will receive the proper meds, healthcare, and therapy, where they can live the rest of their lives, no longer a threat to themselves or others. Jail is not the place for these folks. I pray the victims in this tragedy are well on their way to recovery. No doubt they have suffered severe trauma and will likely need therapy as a result.

God bless you all for your commitment to saving lives in stressful situations. It's wonderful to hear after such a traumatic situation. I hope the man with mental problems gets the help he needs on a long term basis and he is not put on the street again which puts other unsuspecting people at risk.

Looks like the good doctor and Joe have a bit of a bromance going on, the way that they are staring into each other's eyes
