Why Private Equity Is Buying Hospitals & Shutting Them Down

More Perfect Union | August 24, 2025

Last month, a woman showed up to a hospital in Pennsylvania with a barely breathing baby — only to find the hospital closed.

Why? The hospital’s owner sent millions to private equity investors instead of investing in healthcare.

Now patients and workers are paying the price.

There's more money in gutting the hospital and eventually selling it than actually healing people. That's what private equity does, gut a business until its a skeleton, eats the marrow and sells the bones off to another sucker to try and repeat. They have absolutely no interest in the business that the business they bought is supposed to do.

It took me a while to realize that "Del-aire County" is actually Delaware County.

I've been told my entire life that our health- care system is the envy of the world, and I believed it. I realize now that we are just the laughing stock of the world. No wonder folk dance in the street when one of their CEOs is… well, you know.

This is so evil. I'm thrilled that some doctors are bucking the system by becoming concierge doctors. But this doesn't help with emergency care or complicated procedures.

These investors are stealing the value in real estate on what are mostly hospitals established by religious organizations in previous generations. Their assets are undervalued and most are off the books. Simply put, the land associated with hospitals and medical facilities needs to be set aside as providing for the welfare of the community and not allowed to be sold for another purpose.
