   20:20 i went to the minecraft movie w my siblings in our funeral fits (our grandfather died 3 months before the minecraft movie came out rip) and they were like being ironic ab it but i acutally straight up enjoyed the movie fr like it was such a fun vibe and also really stupid but like it didnt take itself too seriously

    I really enjoyed this video! Couldn’t help but bristle at the idea that, as a millennial, I was allowed to enthusiastically enjoy anything I liked with less repercussions than now though! If I’d shown up to school/uni and been obviously enthusiastic about things like anime, comics, DnD, or even just any video game that wasn’t CoD, I would have been bullied. Now it’s more acceptable to publicly enjoy all of those things, and the internet makes it much easier to connect with likeminded people. In fact, social media algorithms will basically connect you with those communities without you even trying. I think this access to community provides balance to the fear of being ridiculed by thousands of people online for being cringe. Also, the fear of ridicule from your immediate social circle, broader community, or even just random passers-by has always existed and is similarly potent. Social media adds a vector for shaming this stuff, but it also adds one for celebrating it. I empathise with the psychological pressure that being perceived online creates for gen z, and I’m sure it’s worse than ever. But the idea that before social media you could just enjoy whatever and not worry about it being seen as cringe is just… false. It’s always been this way.

    I agree with others that a lot of what Gabi is describing as a difference between generations is actually just part of growing up. I relate to the change in perspective she’s describing immensely! You get older, more confident, start tiring of keeping up appearances, and so you divest yourself of the social shield that is “liking things ironically”.

    Go on wikipedia and look up New Sincerity. That’s just one attempt to reckon with this tension between irony and sincerity and it was coined in the 80s.

    This probably comes off as very condescending, and I’m sorry about that. But so much of this video feels extremely relatable, while other parts feel like a misunderstanding of what it was like growing up less than a decade earlier than Gabi.

    I have been mourning the loss of genuine effort in favor of nonchalant-ness for as long as I can remember. I’m gen z and my older sister is a millennial, as cringe as some of their trends may seem looking back, at least they weren’t afraid to put forth effort and be genuine and have fun. Everyone in my grade/age range refused to put effort into anything for fear of being branded “cringe.” School projects, summer camp sketches, any type of activity in which you have to create something that will be perceived by your peers was deemed cringe and stupid, and at that time it wasn’t even cool to do it ironically yet. So many times I wanted to create something fun, be the most energetic, win the prize, but couldn’t because my teammates thought it was cringe. Thank goodness times are changing once again. I love seeing the younger gen Zs and the older gen alphas really putting themselves out there no matter what people say. ❤️

    Whenever I'm in class I'm always so scared of being judged because of having stickers on my laptop or having a vocaloid pencil case because of how shitty people are today but I really love those things and I know I shouldn't be embarrassed about it because it's stuff I actually love
