Peter Gabriel: New Album i/o – So Far, So Good?
Peter Gabriel has been releasing his new album piecemeal and has so far released quite a few tracks. Lets look at those tracks and think about how good this album is going to be?

Great review! Been a fan since he went solo and saw him in Ottawa in September. Blows me away how well his voice is holding up. He’s pure genius and now you can feel the wisdom in these new songs that he’s gathered over the span of his career. Buying the vinyl for sure!!

I just saw him live (for the sixth time since 1982) and he was wonderful as always. I actually made a point of NOT listening to the new songs before the concert. He played a bunch of them and my first impression is that all of them are great. I have pre-ordered the new album. If he hasn't played your city yet, DO go see him!

The show in Berlin was magic. Sound, voice, atmosphere were all spot on.

Just saw him last weekend and yes I sold one of my kidneys but so worth it as unlike some concerts these days, his concerts never disappointment as they are spectacles to be experienced! His voice is in top form. He's holding those notes and he can still hit most of the high ones but for those he understandably that are challenging, he gets help from the backup section. Do go see him. I don't know at his age if he's going to be able to continue to go on the road with his music or not. This album is a masterpiece. Well, worth the wait and once he has an album price available on bandcamp, I'm buying it. 😀

Mr. Gabriel’s songs for his new album, to me, sound like the amazing cumulative talent of our greatest progressive/art rock pioneer. Revealing Peter’s intelligence for music, since his years in Genesis to his solo career, he once again proves his talent is truly remarkable.

These songs sound like unreleased b-sides. For hardcore fans only.

Went to see Pater Gabriel in Dublin in June. I had made a playlist of what I knew the setlist was going to be. Was a bit upset that greats like 'Secret World, The Blood of Eden…etc were not on it. So I continued to listen to the dripfeed of 'new moon' releases so I could get used to the new stuff. I grew to love each track more and more and in hindsight I think it was a brilliant idea to do it this way. Each song ingrained itself in my mind before it began to dawn on me that this is already one of the greatest albums of all time. It is a masterclass. As each new release came out I began to feel that each one was better than the last. How good can this get! As for the concert….it was simply the best I have ever been to both visually and musically. My son (mid 20s) came with me because I had a spare ticket. He didnt really know Peter Gabriel but he was blown away by how good this was. If I could get tickets and a private jet (and a few months off work…and about 20k) I would go to the USA/Canada to see every single show on the next part of the tour.

Album sounds absolutely fascinating, I have to ask you, I noticed in your review of the songs released so far that you like certain mixes of the songs ie the dark or the light mix do you think your going to be slightly disappointed if a certain mix of each song is used or even not used when the album is released. ⚡️

If BOFs like us like it or not, the way Peter has put his new Album on the market is the way they do it these days, and he has understood that…..once again

Wasn't overly impressed with Panopticom when I first heard it, but after hearing all of the songs released so far and the others played live, I 'get it' and really looking forward to seeing the complete album being released. I agree with what others have said, I do think this is becoming Gabriel's most accessible and enjoyable album, harking back to the likes of 'Us' and 'So'. I did notice the single 'I/O' wasn't mentioned and wondered what you thought of that? Probably one his most catchiest choruses, however I struggle with some of the lyrics…

For me, it's turning out to be his best, catchiest record since So.

As a Gabriel obsessive I have bought both version of each song. It occurs to me I am paying way more than if I waited for the finished product! Twenty years for new material though and the guy is never boring. I still think Up is such a strong album.
Over to you Kate Bush….

I'm curious as to how expansive this album will be. From what I have heard it has been pretty impressive.

I've been a Gabriel fan since the early 80s, and first saw him on the So tour in 87(?), and still regularly listen to most of his studio albums. It seems strange to think it's been 20+ years since his last album, Up, which still seems like a recent release to me! I've maybe not been so universally praising of all the i/o tracks, one or two of which seem a little cheesy compared to his usual standards (Panopticom, I'm looking at you…), but there are still some very interesting ones amongst them, like The Court, which has echoes of Family And The Fishing Net from his 4th album, aka Security. But I'm sure that after buying i/o, and listening to it in its entirety a few times, even the cheesier tracks will start to climb in my estimation. Like you, I've preferred the Dark Side mixes throughout, and I hope that there'll be a choice on the album, or maybe two separate albums available. Either way, I'm eager to hear anything new from probably my favourite artist.

I`m going to show in Ottawa Canada on Sat Sept 9 ( 2023 ) Can`t wait. I`ve had to great fortune to have seen Gabriel several times since 1986. All of them fantastic. I`m sure this event we be another " greatest show I`ve ever seen"

I’m really enjoying the new stuff from “i/o”, which Peter seems to be releasing one song per month, but one question remains: Peter, with all due respect, where’s the “i/o” album itself? I mean, he’s already on tour but the “i/o” album itself still hasn’t been released yet. A very unorthodox way to release new music, that’s for sure. Oh well, that’s Peter for you. Looking forward to the concert though. 🙂

I love all the i/o songs he's released thus far (you missed the title cut "i/o") Some of these tracks are just incredibly moving – particularly Playing for Time, Four Kinds of Horses, and Love Heals. I will buy this album the day that it comes out – hopefully, a deluxe edition which includes the three different mixes, Bright side, Dark Side, and In side (atmos mix). I'm flying up to Washington DC in a couple weeks to catch the live show there!

I understand PG is trying to cater to the Spotify crowd to an extent, but I wish he would just release the whole album already!

I loved PGs Genesis era as i did his first few solo albums but the last few have been very heavy going & i don't really hold too much hope for this one as it'll no doubt be a 75 minute bore feist with ten 7 minute songs droning on forever……
