Super rare video of cougar in northern Minnesota
We just got our first video ever of a cougar!! This rare footage was from October 20 and taken in the southern part of the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem. Fortunately, the footage is super clear so no disputing what kind of kitty this is!
The Minnesota DNR has verified 59 cougar observations in the state since 2004 (~3.4 observations/year…2022 numbers not available yet)—none of which have been in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem so far, though several weren’t too far away!
Most wild cougars observed in Minnesota are thought to be transient young males traveling from breeding populations of cougars in the western Dakotas. This is based on evidence (genetics, etc.) from cougars that died or were killed in Minnesota and other midwestern states.

I spotted a lone cougar crossing the road in Hubbard county, summer of 2022. Called the DNR, they said there has been a few rare sightings in my area. Told me they think occasionally a single male will wander over from North Dakota.

Cmon, folks. There have been resident cougar as well as new young males wandering Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan for a century.

To bad the over populated wolves keep them from establishing breeding pairs, like Nebraska not over run by wolves. Moose calves to get eaten up in huge numbers, even black bear are dug out of there dens. To darn many. 22 in one pack Cloquet area. There effectively chewing up the woods. DNR is doing ?

We hunt in this study area, had a little more hair standing up on the back of my neck while walking to the stand- half mile in the dark each morning and night after seeing this video!
He was probably out of there pretty fast- not much to eat out there- unless beaver is on the menu!
Also, didn’t see much for wolf sign or tracks- didn’t see any deer either, densities are very low. The couple feet of snow in April is way harder on the deer than the wolves.

I live in southern WI and 3 years ago my wife spotted large paw prints in the snow while going up our hill. . . large! She thought it was a bear and showed it to me. I inspected and found no claw marks. . . a bear would leave claw marks, but a cat with retractable claws would not. I spoke to a neighbor farmer down the road and he agreed and said he had seen him/her before. Big kitty! Very big kitty!
