The True Story of the Oldest Internet Mystery – Markovian Parallax Denigrate

Chill Fuel | July 31, 2025

Markovian Parallax Denigrate is one of the oldest and most interesting internet mysteries I’ve taken a look at. If you do a google search for the mystery today, articles will tell you the mystery started with a string of spams on the Usenet forum in 1996, with thousands of posts containing the subject line “Markovian Parallax Denigrate” However, in reality the origins of this mystery and how it came to be are much different. Join me as we uncover the true story of the oldest internet mystery. Markovian Parallax Denigrate.

I used to do this as far back as 1993 on use net. Usually back then I would post normally on topic.

But one summer I got bored and started posting random texts just for fun.

My method was to take typed text paragraphs, and cut them vertically up the middle one to three times.

Then I would take those strips of word salad and tape unrelated articles together. So on the left I'd have text from a newspaper article, on the right I'd have an unrelated encyclopedia article, and then in the middle I'd have a section of a page from a fantasy novel or something.

Then I would use my flatbed scanner to ocr scan the page into the computer.

I found this method would generate text that I found very funny. It would have just enough coherence to seem like it could be about something, but was impossible to read.

NEVER trust a Susan. They were raised by people that thought they should name their child “Susan”. If you don’t see the problem there, you’re a Secret Susan.

I'm 8 minutes in and I've heard this lady's name something like 40 or 50 times, and only NOW are we actually asking the question of what she has to do with the usenet posts. Jesus christ, waste more of our time please.

Your voice is so perfect for narrating mysteries! It sets such a dark and heavy mood. Nothing about this content was scary yet I still jumped out of my skin when my phone rang in the middle of the video. Great job!

This is a really good story, and I had a feeling based on the title it was about MPD. I learned about this from the Barely Sociable video that you also mentioned and honestly really appreciate the willingness to come out and say this is just spam. Great video, and an honest one.

Seems cool enough, but can’t pay attention with….how often…you pause and change the,,,,intonation of your voice as if there, should be a comma in places,,,,,,, that don’t need it.

The content is cool man, stop trying to be like every other bedtime story account and change your voice to sound mysterious or whatever. I seriously am clicking off this video bc it’s so annoying:(

So, within half a second, I figured out there is very obviously more going on here.. interestingly, I've never heard of this one.
But in the title markovian, meaning "the future state of a system is only dictated by its current or present state. The history or past state of the system does not matter ans will not define its future ". This can be something seen in machine learning. Parallax in computer science refers to how within a visual environment, (like a image on your screen) there will be something happening in the background different from in the foreground. In common language, it's as simple as closing one eye, looking at your thumb and switching perspective to gain two different perspectives due to the background holding its position and the thumb appearing to switch its spacial positioning. The word is used in astronomy to describe the shifting perspective of a near by star against the background of the distant universe as well. denigrate, to essentially put somone down. That word stands out slightly since it has no scientific meaning, outside of potentially phycology.
So. Idk, I paused this video to flex my vocabulary, I guess lol, but also to point out that one word could be describing the seemingly disordered word salad going on, as well as the other could be hinting at how there is another point of view this should be looked at in order to gain some more sense of it all. Possibly there is an encoded image, or a way to rearrange the pixels idk.. hopefully I didn't just spend all this time typing to learn that everything I said here is discredit in the video lol

The time Span I Spent eating my canned Spam w/spaghetti gave me the opportunity to read all of the 607 Spam emails I had titled "Give a Spank to a Skank"
    It's from my ex-gf, it'S Pam … . ..

Joyfully Denigrated, I must ask my bro's best friend who shares his wife with me, Markovian. Who took our parallax to the mechanic???

I can personally attest that it was NOT just Christian forums that felt the effects of MPD. In my wilder, crazier days I did wild and crazy things like hang out on the alt.mst3k Usenet group.

There came a time–whether it was August 1996 or not, I don't recall, but it sounds plausible–when the forum was overrun with these posts. I made a post saying something like,, "Uh, guys, can we get back to talking about MST3K again?" I cited the nonsense posts. The replies I got were along the lines of, "Meh, we like it this way," so I decided I didn't need to keep hanging around there.

Anyway…so yes, I can testify to the fact that it was not limited to Xtian Usenet.

Good breakdown, I suppose as usual mysteries are often less interesting when all aspects are examined and the mystery is solved lol. Still a cool bit of history though.

And today's LLMs have some similarities with how these ancient bots prank people when it comes to generating text
This is really fascinating to me

Your conclusion is absolutely correct. It's literally nothing more than an atheist with way too much time on his hands trolling Christian groups. Atheists trolling Christians on the Internet is nothing new.

This could have been half the length. so much repetition for you to tell us that it was a simple test. Seems like there was basically no information found by you

I don't know if you can say Usenet doesn't really exist any more. As long as there's a NNTP server operating somewhere, even intermittently, even if its net is not part of the "physical" Internet, isn't that Usenet? There were dial-in BBSs that carried Usenet groups. Fidonet carried Usenet groups.

Your definition of Markov Chain the term "allow calculations": a Markov Chain is an stochastic process there are no calculations only probabilities of the next state, that depend of the current state and they CAN depend of past states deepening of THE ORDER of the Markov chain: there is really no a canonical definition though so each author can chose an slightly different approach. I always lied this theory but the other details you mention made me rethink that. you say it seems complex but to explain that is simple: think in transitions probabilities: open a book select a word at random and write it open again and search this word in another place and take the next word and write it, look this word in the book, rinse and repeat. This will produce a text that almost makes sense, if you use Markov chain of higher order more and more the text will look real but never really real. It is a funny game that can be tried at letter level and it very revealing.

I love your channel, but I really wish people would stop with the "old internet nostalgia" and the "lol it's like 90s TV shows" nostalgia. As someone who was in high school/university in the 90s it's so cringe to me. But your videos are fantastic, please keep up the great work.

A ciphered message will seem gibberish all giberish withpout recognizable words. if someone would use steganography they would use image groups so it would not call undesired attention. Susan Lindauer was released one year later because she was a profoundly delusional person that though she could achieve peace in middle orient and the attempts to contact some people made her suspect: se was completely disturbed.
A correction about cryptography: codes use on number stations CAN NOT EVER be compromised: they use one time pad: if the keys are truly random and have the same size of the message and are NEVER repeated they can not EVER be broken because there will be always a key that can return any message possible of that size. It is mathematically proven (and easy to demonstrate). Project Venona deciphered one time pad messages used by Russian spies in US because THEY REUSED THE KEYS. Yes even modern cyphers can be decoded if you have enough computing power but one time pad can not. But I agree is not the case of those messages.
A stroke of the brush does not guarantee art from the bristles.
