Patti Smith Unveils Upcoming Memoir, “Bread of Angels”
Patti Smith Announces New Memoir: Bread of Angels Set for November Release
In a literary revelation that promises to deepen our understanding of her prolific life, legendary musician and poet Patti Smith has announced her upcoming memoir, Bread of Angels. Scheduled for release on November 4 through Random House, the book takes readers on a poignant journey through her childhood in working-class Philadelphia and South Jersey, her marriage to MC5 guitarist Fred “Sonic” Smith, and the family’s relocation to Michigan—a tapestry woven with beauty, loss, and the indomitable power of art.
“It took a decade to write this book, grappling with the beauty and sorrow of a lifetime,” Smith stated. “I’m hoping that people will find something they need.” The release date is particularly symbolic, coinciding with the anniversary of Fred Smith’s passing and the birthday of Robert Mapplethorpe, Smith’s late friend and renowned photographer.
Described by Random House as “the most intimate of Smith’s memoirs,” Bread of Angels explores her teenage years, highlighting the first sparks of artistic ambition and romance amid profound losses. Smith reflects on years devoted to her children, navigating grief, gratitude, and the transformative nature of imagination. The memoir signals a return to writing for Smith—a cornerstone in her artistic evolution, as she strives to turn the mundane into the magical.
This marks Smith’s third memoir, following the beloved Just Kids and M Train. In her 2010 classic, she chronicled her early life in New York City, notably her relationship with Mapplethorpe. Meanwhile, M Train, released in 2015, offered meditative vignettes on travel, her reflective home in Rockaway Beach, and the solace found in black coffee.
Since teasing a sequel to Just Kids in 2012, fans have eagerly awaited more. This latest offering culminates years of artistic exploration and personal introspection, expanding on her earlier narratives while remaining true to her roots.
Alongside the memoir, Smith is preparing to embark on a monumental 50th anniversary tour celebrating her landmark debut album, Horses. Fans will have the chance to experience the album in its entirety, featuring long-time collaborators Lenny Kaye and Jay Dee Daugherty, creating a sonic backdrop for the stories encapsulated in her writing.
With Bread of Angels, Patti Smith once again invites us to witness the struggles and triumphs that have shaped her into an icon, reminding us of the beauty inherent in the act of storytelling. As she reflects on art, love, and resilience, one can only anticipate the profound impact this memoir will have on her ever-growing legacy.
