The band broke the news via social media on Saturday, April 5, revealing that Allen passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family. Although the cause of death was not disclosed, the band made mention of Allen’s battle with early-onset dementia, which he had struggled with for several years.
Born David Geoffrey Allen in Kendal, England, Allen’s musical journey began in the vibrant Leeds scene, where his energetic bass lines and keen sense of rhythm would soon find a home in Gang of Four. Joining forces with Jon King, Andy Gill, and Hugo Burnham, Allen took the spotlight after stepping in for original bassist Dave Wolfson. His work on the band’s critically adored 1979 debut, Entertainment!, laid the groundwork for a legacy that would intertwine post-punk with sharp socio-political critiques, capturing the disenchanted spirit of the late 70s and early 80s.

He quickly pivoted to a new project, Shriekback, alongside Barry Andrews of XTC. This marked the beginning of various side endeavors, including stints with bands like Elastic Purejoy, Low Pop Suicide, King Swamp, and Faux Hoax. After years of exploration outside of Gang of Four, Allen returned for a reunion tour in 2004 but found himself at odds with the band’s iconic figure, Andy Gill, leading to another departure.
Despite their differences, Allen and his contributions remained integral to Gang of Four’s identity.
