Wildlife at a remote beaver pond in a national park
We set this camera up on an idyllic remote beaver pond in the dead of winter in hopes of getting wolves crossing the ice. And that worked but we also caught several other critters as well as the changing of winter to spring.
The video starts with some frisky behavior in heart of the mating season. Old V083 (aka “Mithrandir”) is trying to court a young lady wolf for a little babymaking when a subordinate wolf tries flirtin’ with his girl. V083 wasn’t tolerating any of that behavior and literally pounces on this other wolf (the audio is pretty neat here too).
The scene kinda reminds us of a Jim Croce song:
“Well Friday ’bout a week ago
Leroy shootin’ dice,
And at the edge of the bar
Sat a girl named Doris,
And oh that girl looked nice.
Well, he cast his eyes upon her,
and the trouble soon began,
And Leroy Brown had learned a lesson
‘Bout a-messin’ with the wife of a jealous man”
Of course, we are just having fun here. This kind of behavior is very typical for wolves in the mating season. And it is very likely the subordinate wolf was V083’s son. Anywho, in the end V083 did get to make his babies and this female had a litter of pups this spring.
Some other neat highlights include a wolf scenting tracking a deer, a lynx and a moose crossing the ice, and probably the neatest video of them all: a female moose swimming across the beaver pond with her calf. We captured that on camera before!
