Briston Maroney Announces New Album JIMMY, Shares Two Singles: “Tomatoes” and “Bullshit”

In a vibrant return to the music scene, singer-songwriter Briston Maroney has officially announced the release of his highly anticipated third full-length album, JIMMY, set to drop on May 2nd via Atlantic Records. Alongside the announcement, Maroney has dropped two fresh singles, “Tomatoes” and “Bullshit,” both of which showcase his knack for weaving personal narrative into resonant soundscapes.

Building on the success of 2023’s Ultrapure and his 2021 debut, Sunflower, JIMMY promises to be a maturation of Maroney’s artistry. The album features 12 tracks that delve into the complexities of his upbringing, navigating the contrasting influences of his divorced parents: one from the laid-back, adventurous spirit of north Florida, and the other from the more structured, high-pressure environment of a Catholic school in Tennessee. It’s this duality that serves as the heartbeat of the album, culminating in an overarching message about the importance of being true to oneself.

Maroney’s latest singles capture this ethos remarkably well. “Tomatoes” channels grunge influences through its catchy, bouncing melody while reflecting on the turbulent journey of post-adolescence. On the other hand, “Bullshit” is a cathartic anthem in which Maroney lays bare his frustrations, boldly declaring, "it’s all bullshit," before playfully concluding, “I’ll be honest, yeah, I cannot get enough of it.” The raw candidness in his lyrics is underscored by equally engaging instrumentals, affirming Maroney’s ability to translate relatable moments into evocative storytelling.

These new tracks follow February’s release of “Real Good Swimmer,” suggesting a well-rounded preview of what fans can expect when JIMMY finally arrives. Maroney’s ability to candidly communicate his experiences, whether it’s “listening to Ween on an airplane” or the nuances of his formative days, ensures that each listen feels personal and impactful.

Fans eager for a touch of Maroney’s live energy can look forward to his upcoming European tour, where he’ll be supporting fellow indie-pop outfit Peach Pit. This summer, the two will co-headline the “Long Hair, Long Life Tour,” making stops in major cities across North America, including Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

With a voice that captures both melancholy and joy in equal measure, Briston Maroney’s JIMMY is set to be a significant chapter in his evolving musical journey. Mark your calendars for May 2nd, and don’t forget to stream “Tomatoes” and “Bullshit” below to get a taste of what’s to come.
