Wolf pack feeding on freshly-killed deer in northern Minnesota
Some stunning aerial footage of the Birch Bark Pack feeding on a freshly-killed deer on the ice of Crane Lake, just south of Voyageurs National Park from a few days ago. This is something that occurs regularly but rarely does anyone get to see it in such detail!
In the video, you can see the breeding pair of the pack, the breeding female is the whiter look wolf in the front with a relatively distinctive face and the breeding male the wolf that drags the deer head off at the end of the video.
This incredible footage was captured by Brett Wenzel and Michael Schwanke, who each had drones that allowed them to capture this event from different angles.
In January, someone on our team actually had another neat encounter with this pair on a remote beaver pond. They hiked down to a beaver pond to set up a camera and out on the ice about 30 yards away the breeding male appeared.
This wind was in the right direction so the male couldn’t smell the person and so he just stood and stared trying to figure out what this person was. He eventually went back in the woods and then the breeding female popped out on the ice.
At first she stood and stared, but then she moved closer to about 25 yards or so away. This person stood perfectly still and she stood perplexed.
The male then started going around the far grassy side of the pond and the person watched him bound through the grass as he tried to get behind them, no doubt to pick up the person’s scent.
And once he did, he came flying back through the grass and into the far woods. All the while the female continued to stare at the person.
Eventually, the female decided it was time to go and loped into the woods and disappeared. The person then set a camera on that beaver pond…seemed like the perfect place!
