Beaver dam cam: the Vermilion River Pack
We set up this ‘dam cam’ on a long winding beaver dam we suspected the Vermilion River Pack was using frequently to get around a large wetland area. Turns out, the dam was a veritable expressway for the pack…especially the pups.
Oh, and at least one otter that wanted to show off some moves…
Anyway, this video shows most of the daytime footage we captured (we did not include most of the night time footage). Almost all of the wolves in this video are pups that are starting to look adult-like but aren’t quite there. They still have that lanky and doofy look at this point!
The Vermilion River Pack was quite successful at raising pups as 3 of the 4 pups survived to winter. A 75% survival rate of pups in our area is far above average!
The one adult that approaches the camera is actually a lone male wolf that is not part of a pack. He spends a while intensively sniffing the dam, likely smelling the scent of the Vermilion River wolves, before moving on.
Then you can see the breeding female of the Vermilion River Pack at the dam that night (12 hours later) and she scent marks the spot the lone male was sniffing to assert that this area is occupied!
