Native Bidaské with Tafv Sampson, a set decorator on Reservation Dogs
Join our Publisher Levi Rickert as he interviews Tafv Sampson (Muscogee Creek) about her beautiful set decorating work on Reservation Dogs season 3. She’s also the granddaughter of the late great actor Will Sampson, who I’m sure you know founded the American Indian Registry for the Performing Arts.
From a design perspective, Tafv was inspired to make the show as meaningful for the community as possible by collaborating/learning from local artists and dressing the sets with loaned, emotionally significant objects (like Casey Camp-Horinek’s shawl, which she wore to Wounded Knee protests in her youth for her character’s home). She also worked to nail the cultural specificity of the home of “Maximus” (Graham Greene) in ep. 302 (where the sets are dressed with Native American concepts of star people in mind) and the 1940’s boarding school world of ep. 304.
