Built during the 1st century CE, the Colosseum attested to the power and gravitas of the Roman Empire. Events at the Colosseum, originally called the Flavian Amphitheater, entertained the masses in Rome and often featured elaborate spectacles. Details from Roman gladiatorial combats, mock battles, and raucous celebrations are full of wild accounts of unusual and unexpected happenings at the Colosseum. Over the centuries that followed, the massive amphitheater was repurposed in even more surprising and – very often – unconventional ways.
