Wolf pack chasing a coyote
The Thuja Pack chasing a coyote in March. Wolf O3S, the breeding male, was leading the charge and goes flying past the camera followed by his mate, the breeding female, who is followed by a lagging pup.
We show the whole sequence at normal speed to begin the video and then a slowed down version since it all happens so fast. For instance, we slowed down the footage of O3S running by 90% given how fast he was moving…
Of course, it would have been cool to capture more footage of this chase but observations such as this in forested places like northern Minnesota are pretty hard to capture in the first place so was neat to get any footage of it.
Part of the fun, challenge, and frustration of studying wolves in forested environments where you only get brief little snippets of insight or observation!
We have no idea how the sequence ended, and if the coyote escape (we would suspect it did but just a guess). We have yet to find a coyote that we believe was killed by wolves in our 10 years of fieldwork. No doubt it occurs from time to time but likely isn’t a frequent event.
