Wolf carrying tiny crying pup that was just born
This is a pretty wild video. This is the breeding female of the Mithrandir Pack in April carrying a tiny crying pup that must have literally just been born…we would guess within minutes of this video as the pup is still wet and the female has blood on her back legs and vaginal area from giving birth.
We suspect—and we are speculating here—the female did not have a den prepared as it would be pretty strange for her to have given birth at a den and then move a pup that has been alive for a matter of minutes.
This female is 3 years old and this is her first year giving birth. Thus, this occurrence could simply be a result of her inexperience with raising pups.
And what of the fate of the pup? Anyone’s guess at this point. Pups are generally able to withstand inclement weather to an extent and if this female quickly found a place for a den, it is possible the pup was fine.
But seeing as the pup was likely just born in the woods somewhere, it is also possible this female’s inexperience doesn’t bode well for the pup.
We will have to see if we have footage of the Mithrandir Pack with a pup this summer of all (or pups if this female had others not seen in this video).
Anyway, these are the really fascinating glimpses we get from having so many trail cameras out. Every year we seem to capture really unique behaviors that we had never observed up to that point.
