Introducing Cheryl Andrews-Maltais, Chairwoman of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head Aquinnah and a candidate for the President of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI). With over 13 years dedicated to the service and upliftment of the Wampanoag Tribe, Cheryl Andrews-Maltais is passionate about championing the rights and aspirations of Native communities across the nation.
From her leadership roles on numerous councils and boards to her recognition as a “Woman of the Year ” in 2019, Cheryl’s leadership and vision have always been driven by the needs and hopes of our indigenous brothers and sisters. Now, drawing from her experiences and accolades such as her induction into the WEWIN “Warrior Women’s Circle” in 2022 and her role under the Obama Administration, Cheryl Andrews-Maltais seeks to bring a fresh perspective to the NCAI. Combining traditional values with forward-thinking strategies, she aims to empower, uplift, and strengthen our communities.
Professionally, Mrs. Maltais held a prestigious role under the Obama Administration as a Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary – Indian Affairs. Her varied experience spans from representing Indian Affairs at the UN to testifying before Congress. Prior to her political journey, she played a crucial role in preserving tribal history as the Tribe’s first Tribal Historic Preservation Officer. Before her tribal endeavors, she held managerial positions in logistics and consulting.
On a personal note, she’s been married to Daniel Maltais for 31 years, with a daughter, Samantha, who’s set to become the first from the Wampanoag Tribe to graduate from Harvard Law School, aiming for a career in Indian law.
