When the world thinks of California — they tend to think of a fairytale.

The beaming sun, the surf-ready beaches, the famous celebrities, and of course the beautiful babes. For so long, the Golden State had been looked at as the pinnacle of Western civilization and a metaphor for the American Dream. It’s been described in countless tunes by dozens of artists and over several decades. But one song in particular looked to correct that entire façade (“Californication”).

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are undoubtedly a California band. They not only formed in LA but their songs are full of themes, images, and references to their home state. They’ve seen firsthand the effects the Hollywood lifestyle has had on its inhabitants and the world at large. And their most prominent song, “Californication”, speaks to just how far the state has fallen — revealing the darker side of Hollywood that seems to go unnoticed. But where did things go so wrong? In order to find out, let’s explore the state’s history and peek through the lens of the artists that shaped California’s fabled identity.
