Psycho’s Norman Bates & the Hidden Life of Anthony Perkins

Matt Baume | January 4, 2025

Psycho’s Norman Bates: one of the most memorable movie characters in history. Brought to life by Anthony Perkins, Alfred Hitchcock, and a protégée of HP Lovecraft, Norman shocked audiences when he first appeared in 1960, and found an unexpected second life in sequels and TV series. And while Norman the character was known for his dark secrets, actor Tony Perkins carried secrets of his own — from a forbidden romance with a Hollywood hunk to having more in common with Norman Bates than the public knew. This is the story of Norman Bates … how cinema’s greatest psycho was brought to life, to how he lives on today, even after his creators are gone.
