Adventures in Wonderland (1992) Was Way WEIRDER Than You Remember

Dial-Up Days | November 7, 2026

If you grew up watching Disney Channel in the early ’90s, there’s a good chance Adventures in Wonderland feels like something you half remember from a dream.

Alice walked through her bedroom mirror into a brightly colored world filled with musical numbers, bad puns, a rollerblading White Rabbit, a dramatic Red Queen, rapping Tweedles, and one very strange Cheshire Cat.

But the story behind the show may be even more interesting than Wonderland itself.

In this episode of Dial-Up Days, we’re going back through the mirror to revisit one of Disney Channel’s most unique and strangely forgotten shows.

We’ll look at how Adventures in Wonderland turned Lewis Carroll’s world into a very ’90s kids’ series, why the show built entire episodes around taking everyday expressions literally, and how a combination of puppets, prosthetics, claymation, giant painted backdrops, and hundreds of original songs created a world that felt completely unlike anything else on television.

We’ll also dig into what it was actually like to make the show.

Patrick Richwood, the actor inside the White Rabbit, had never been on rollerblades when he auditioned — so he told them he could skate anyway. He then spent hours a day in prosthetic makeup, heavy foam and fur, and studio lights hot enough that he says he passed out during production.

The Cheshire Cat required an entire team of puppeteers and separate green-screen shoots.

The show’s music department included Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, and the writers and performers eventually helped Adventures in Wonderland win multiple Daytime Emmy Awards.

And then there’s the episode that never aired.

Disney produced 100 episodes, but only 99 became part of the regular series. The missing episode, “White Rabbits Can’t Jump,” featured O.J. Simpson and disappeared from the schedule after his 1994 arrest. Even when the series eventually arrived on Disney+, that episode remained missing.

But this isn’t really a story about a lost episode.

It’s about why so many people remember Adventures in Wonderland with such strange affection — even if they haven’t thought about it in decades.

As kids, we saw the fantasy.

Now we can go back and see the incredible amount of work hiding behind it.

So when you think about Adventures in Wonderland, what comes back first?

The White Rabbit? The Queen? The music? The mirror? Or one incredibly specific joke you haven’t heard in thirty years?

Let me know in the comments.

And if you enjoy going back to the shows, movies, commercials, toys, and pop-culture memories we grew up with, subscribe to Dial-Up Dayz for more nostalgic deep dives.

We didn’t have cable growing up but my aunt did and whenever this show was on I was always fascinated. Even to this day I love Alice in Wonderland and this show was a huge part of that. Also fueled my love of musical theater

I recently looked up the actress that played Alice because IDK if I'd ever seen her in anything else. Turns out the biggest project she had in recent years was playing the "Good Martian" helping the main kid in one of Disney's biggest flops MARS NEEDS MOMS

There are a few mysteries about the show:
    1. Was the mirror in Alice's bedroom a magic portal, or does she have the power to get to Wonderland with any type of mirror?
    2. How did she get back home?
    3. Can any of the Wonderlanders visit Alice in her room?
    4. Did her family know?
    5. Where were the King of Hearts and her Card Soldiers? Without the Soldiers, what was stopping the others from rebelling against her?
    6. It was said that there is a train station in Wonderland. Does that mean that there are other lands in that universe?

I was convinced for years that this show was a fever dream because I remembered it so vividly but my mom didn't remember the show. Thank goodness for Disney plus validating my childhood!

disney will never ever let this episode be seen now that oj became one of the most hated people in the world. it's also not appropriate to have a real life murderer as a special guest star in a children's show.

Oh man I was just talking about this with my sister a couple weeks ago and she couldn't remember what I was talking about. I wasn't successful at that time in finding it, but now you handed it to me haha
