Big Tech really wants to put a computer on your face.
Google Glass tried it. Snapchat keeps trying it. Meta is now making an alarming number of smart glasses, despite the minor issue that most people have spent the last decade not asking for them.
And to be fair, some of the new ones are actually useful. They can translate things, identify objects and take photos without pulling out your phone. They can also put a camera directly on your face, which creates several fun new ways to secretly film strangers.
Let’s look at why companies like Meta, Google and Snapchat are so determined to make smart glasses happen, what they actually get out of having cameras pointed wherever we’re looking, and whether AI glasses are finally here to stay.

The only good thing I've heard about these smart glasses is that they can be very helpful for the blind or visually impaired people. I don't think it should have the option to record anything, though. I just think it's a shame that something that could be a great tool for people with disabilities is used to do bad things. But who am I kidding, we always knew that they wouldn't be used appropriately. Sigh.

I mean, I like the idea of these things and the stuff they can do in shows and movies… but they don't really do those thing yet, or if they try they don't do them very well. VR games sound cool but so far I think I could count the number that look worth playing on a hand or 2…and that is hard to justify at least $300 to even try to play them. I'm guessing the billionaires also like that idea and have the "f it" money to keep trying… but it feels like it is going to be a looooong time…
Edit after the end of the video, I also don't care to film things and upload them… I just wanna see cool stuff in VR or that looks like it is in the real world… and I don't want corpo people or creeps looking at what I'm looking at or trying to make money and ads out of it..

Literally the only thing I'd want "smart glasses" for is a little minimap like you have in video games. I'm really bad at navigation in real life, but having a videogame-like map would help loads.
Unfortunately I don't think I could just get that without any of the garbage data harvesting stuff, so I guess it will forever be off the table.
