The greatest home recording ever made

David Hartley | October 27, 2026

The recording of More Than a Feeling by Boston is one of the most incredible recording stories in music history.

Scholz grew up in Ohio and was influenced by James Gang (Joe Walsh, guitarist). Little doubt he was taken by producer /engineer Bill Szymczyk.

Bill Szymczyk produced famous songs (Thrill is Gone, Muddy Waters; Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo, Rick Derringer; Fooled Around and Fell in Love, Elvin Bishop) and whole LPs from Joe Walsh (But Seriously Folks; Ordinary Average Guy, etc.), Eagles (Hotel California, their biggest), Bob Seger's Against the Wind.

This is an awesome tribute to Boston and to Tom S who was a master craftsman. I was a senior in high school when this was released and I played this song endlessly and from loud speakers in my car at the time. Thank you for putting this together

I know this isn't going to win me any popularity contests, but I never liked Boston. Always changed the station when it came on. It's not you, it's me. I appreciate its place in music history. I appreciate the devotion it took to make this record. It's just not for me.

you keep repeating the words "home recording" and "not a studio". its a distinction without a difference as as good or better recording hardware was used. typical British word games used to make something sound fantastical.

In 1976 I'm a young Marine stationed on Camp Pendleton. Experiencing all things growing up, responsibility, mistakes and so on. Then this album dropped. Like a milestone in life. I was blown away. Dropping the needle today takes me right back to '76. Great analysis of this masterpiece!

What an EXCELLENT video. I’ve long thought this to be possibly the most perfectly crafted song of the last half century. This video is like taking the most perfect meal that you fondly remember eating, one that was so good it held an almost mystical quality, and having someone later present to you the exact recipe for how it was prepared. Outstanding.

How do you explain their live videos? I saw them in 1976 at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI Fieldhouse Gym) in Troy, New York and they Definitely looked and sounded LIVE. Watch the video for More Than a Feeling and watch Tom Sholz (No t) play guitar.
