The Serenade Nobody Asked For – with Getdown Services!

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | October 27, 2026

Today I’m speaking to one of my favourite bands – Getdown Services. Their music was the soundtrack to my summer and they count Walton Goggins and Harry Styles as fans; they’ll be supporting Harry in Berlin next year. Thanks to Josh and Ben for the chat and for being the only ones to guess the “tune” I was playing on my violin. Top stuff.

Loved this! Love Anthony especially when he does Queen/Freddie versions.

Funny thing that you mentioned Liam Gallagher. I just watched a 4 part series on You Tube on the rise, fall and rebirth of Liam’s voice over the years. At some point in the last 15 years Liam has to have had vocal training because he doesn’t lose his voice anymore. He suffered terrible bouts of laryngitis for days. I watched a trained vocalist agree with the fact that Liam said doing a show was like boxing a 20 round match because he put his whole body into those vocals. It was definitely because he never took vocal lessons and didn’t warm up his voice, etc. …but come on who was gonna tell Liam Gallagher he needed vocal training at the height of Oasis fame? Now he uses his ā€œinstrumentā€ correctly. Thank God he was able to save his voice and his style of singing.

Then I started to think about Freddie Mercury. As far as I know Freddie didnt have vocal lessons either. This is why Queen fans are fortunate to have, often two versions of Queen songs. The album version and the live version. In The Lap of The Gods live is by far my fav version vs the album version. Freddie always lowered the ranges on his voice live because he knew he couldnt tour for months singing those songs at the top of his register. Everyone thinks Freddie was always perfect but a lot of Queen fans know the difference. There are times, granted they are few, when Freddie just strained his voice so bad he could barely sing. Luckily he had Roger or Brian to kick in when this happened just like Liam had Noel.

Can you imagine what Freddie Mercury would have sounded like if he had had proper vocal trainer and in ear monitors? I already think no rock singer could ever touch him!

Also, Freddie started smoking at an older age because he liked the rasp it gave his voice. Liam Gallagher tries to quit smoking when he’s doing albums or tours because he doesn’t really like the rasp when he performs.

Question: do you think early vocal training for either Freddie or Liam would have created those same great voices if they had been musically trained? Or would we have gotten a more generic sound instead of the raw power they used to sing their songs?

Well, the violin part is getting better, only because it was Aerosmith. Nice vocal, by the way.
Still sad about the recent passing of Frank Beard, drummer for ZZ Top. He was one of my favorites. He was very nice and kind when I met him once. My favorite drummer now is Rufus Tiger Taylor; he's the best.
Nice chocolate brown suit, Justin, very autumnal.

Oh ha ha.Just listening to the bit about writing The Radiator! Just shows you can be inspired by anything….I may pen a sing about my boiler now?! Love the light heartedness of this, needed in this world more than ever.ā¤

That violin serenade had me thinking of Eddie Jobson in Roxy Music. I can picture Justin turning that mangled little melody into an electric-violin squall onstage with The Darkness: velvet, voltage and a flash of beautiful chaos. I do have one reservation about Getdown Services opening for former One Directioner Harry Styles. Their scruffy disco-punk and his sleek, disco-drenched dance-pop still seem galaxies apart. But with a crowd of up to 80,000 Berliners under the Tempelhof sky, surely a few glam-hearted souls will be ready to catch the beat, welcome the racket and dance across the divide.

Great interview from both parties, a true musical profomace art and creative endeavour interview. Lots of funny phrasing to many to mention and the violin saga continues šŸ™‚

Its funny that Steven tyler is embarrassed about the song (dont wanna miss a thing) or as he says (don't wanna kiss your thing) maybe its not rock and roll enough but its definitely one of the things he will be remembered for. It was the main reason I brought the Armageddon sound track. Turned out to be a great decision not just because of the Aerosmith heavy track selection including the come together cover (definitive version) but also some other fun songs like La Grange. It was also pleasant to see recognition of zz top's use of percussion as they are broadly known for their guitar sound but as an example Frank Beard interaction with lead guitar is what makes La Grange. Similar to jimmy Hendrix (foxy lady) there is a simple riff and basic narrative carried by the lyrics but its the back and forth between drums and guitar that moves the song along. I do wish we would see something like that on a darkness album where Rufus and Justin could really have some fun with a guitar percussion play off.
