David Bowie – Is this a FAILED Concept Album?
Bowie’s ‘Diamond Dogs’ album is seen as conceptually a bit loose, but is thel ine between his glam period to his emracing American soul – one of many of his transitional albums.

Does the fact that this album is conceptually a bit muddled, detract from it as a great Bowie album? Or do you think this is a weak album in his discography? https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFXe8VZJ0xWw

Are you completely mad or just deaf?
Diamond Dogs is a superb record without a bad track or filler in it's entire run time.
Trust alleged 'music journalists' to get it so disgracefully wrong – probably resentful because they have so little actual talent or ability themselves.
The reason Orwell's estate said 'no' was totally a result of the terrible film adaptations and her reluctance to let Bowie try.
Side 2 is a tour-de-force of pounding rhythms overlaid with frantic guitars and gets you by the throat & never lets go.
Quoting interviews is an example of low hanging fruit being plucked as Bowie said things specifically to outrage, never to be taken seriously and mocking the media with his tongue firmly in cheek.
Now please go away

An influence on Diamond Dogs that almost everyone misses is A Boy and His Dog by Harlan Ellison. This was first published in New Worlds and Bowie had been hanging out with it's editor Michael Moorcock. The novella tells the story of a teenager in a post apocalyptic landscape who befriends a telepathic mutant dog.

Good topic/question. I'm glad we have your brain on the pan frying here. Much more interesting place.

Diamond Dogs is the dogs bolloxs Barry. I heard it age 12, and was blown out the window.

Great review. Takes me back to a certain girls bedroom in the mid 70s. She was a bowie fanatic. 😊👍✌️

Diamond Dogs, Young Americans and Station To Station is the only trilogy you ever need.

With the release of the fantastic CD box sets for Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory, I had hoped for similar for Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs. One can hope.

To be completely honest, for many years this was not one of my favorite Bowie albums. That was due more to the cover than the music. I just hated the cover. Once I got past that and really listened to the tracks, it became one of my favorite albums. Not top 5, but probably top 10. Is it muddled? Yes. Does that matter? Not a bit.

I don´t like much this album, but as I discovered I am facist, I will listen to this again. I hate communism and socialist, and I was told this make me facist. So be it

I've never been a huge fan of Bowie, but I am VERY pleased to see a video that isn't "Top 10 drunken moments from vocalists", or whatever. More of these please, Barry!

Good review and insights. Not a perfect album but maybe, just maybe the inability to gain the rights to make a musical based around 1984 might have been for the best. I mean Sgt Pepper is a concept album in name only and Diamond Dogs gets pretty close and ends up oddly prefacing some aspects of punk.

Concept or not, it's a damn fine album that sounds as good today as it did back then.
