the bizarre evolutionary biology, culture and philosophy of omegaverse.
slept on work of speculative biology or just booktok insanity? not sure. what a ride this was.

I was gonna comment and say that no, lots of the rules you say are inherent to omegaverse (ex: A’s and O’s not being able to biologically resist one another) are actually very fluid (hah) based on the author and what pedantic rules they’ve set for their universe. And then I tried to recall some examples and. guys. I read so much erotica. 😭

never liked the omegaverse much. the concept of a highly bio-essentialist hierarchy structure of society, where some individuals are just inherently smarter/stronger/hotter feels pretty uncomfortable.

but its also erotica, so i don't really care.

I’m so glad somebody else is interested in this for a sociological and evolutionary perspective. Like I, too, need to know whether or not “my inner wolf told me to” is a valid excuse in court.

most interesting part of omegaverse is the scent pheromone thing. i've seen some pretty crazy pheromone descriptions. can range anywhere from peaches and cream and pie to blood and ash and fire scary edgy oo. every time i read a new omegaverse fanfic i am most curious about how the author will describe their pheromones and most of the time they are WRONG

I took a few personality quizzes on which Omegaverse thing you are and generally got Beta
Which I am very okay with because the lives of the others sound generally miserable

Just want to say that omegaverse thens to be different depends on what country, fandom and media u are consuming. For example:

In mangas omegaverse has almost none of the wolf likes dynamics, like packs, calling the children's pup, some don't have nest, etc

In manhwas is pretty similar to mangas, but they seen the be more "wolf like"

In fandoms where platonic and family dynamics is more prevalent the omegaverse will be more pack oriented, with more stricts rules about what is a "the pack omega" or "the pack alpha", even the place of betas in the pack

Soo everything in omegaverse depends, the only thing that stay the same is the classification omega, beta e alpha

Thank you for highlighting that this was a trope created by perverts for perverts. The lack of world building depends on the fic writer really. I'm more than happy to suggest some fics if you're ever interested in good fics with good world building that goes more into the potential society and its everyday dynamics.

To throw in my psuedo-academic two cents: The Inuyasha fandom, which was one of the largest fandoms in the world in the late 90's early 00's and definitely one of the largest (and first ever) on the internet when fanfiction sites were first invented, was also a major influence of the proto-omegaverse fandom world which then influenced the creation of omegaverse. Over 100,000 Inuyasha fanfics were written between 2000-2005, making it the 2nd largest fandom in the world at that time based on number of online fanfics written, with Harry Potter in first.

The Inuyasha fandom had a need to solve two main issues: the primary female love interest, Kagome, was human and mortal, while the demon characters lived hundreds, potentially thousands, of years, and the main male lead, who was a dog demon, had two potential female love interests to choose from and spent nearly 200 episodes NOT picking one or the other, so some sort of catalyst or prompting was needed to get him to break the stalemate AND also prove the choice was correct/ make the waiting worth it.

To resolve this, the dog demon characters were often assigned "wolf-like" traits of having a fated "true mate", often identified by scent and "claimed" with a mark (that was first part of demon-magic, but then evolved to a biting mark) which would magically bond the two souls and grant the human access to the demon’s life span and potentially his powers, while also asserting legitimacy that she was the one true ‘real’ partner over the other one.

The dog demon main characters had many canine features already within cannon, such as heightened senses of smell and prominent canine teeth, and Inuyasha's monthly cycle of turning into a human every new moon and going into a berserk ‘full demon’ mode at certain times planted the seeds for many omegaverse tropes.

Inuyasha was often sent into a sexual frenzy during his ‘demon mode’ phases to prompt the mating. This was the kick-off of things such as heat cycles and forced bonding. Writers with knowledge of dog anatomy also got kinky by introducing all of the “knotting” stuff as part and parcel of him being a dog demon.

The introduced tropes were insanely popular and become widespread and common. Which those early high school fans then took with them to other fandoms as they grew up and spread out and online fandoms became standard.

However, the primary pairings of the Inuyasha fandom are heterosexual, so there was simply no need for that next step of true omegaverse: secondary genders and male pregnancy.

Then the 2005-mid 2010’s saw the rise of SuperWhoLock, where 2 of the 3 most-popular shows, with the largest online fandoms, centered around all male protagonists and few, if any, female characters who could act as romantic interests, and this was followed by Hannibal in 2012, which was similar, but also really twisted.

These fandoms needed to resolve the issue of getting these hyper-masculine characters together without making them ‘too gay’, how to ‘force’ two characters together into a required relationship that they would then need to work out (a long standing romance trope, which often pops up in heterosexual romances with either 1. A forced marriage, such as in historical romances, where the two are required to be together by societal forces, or 2. An accidental pregnancy) and how to get them children, the pinnacle of a heterosexual relationship . All while keeping them appealing to cis het female readers.

Before Supernatural, Sherlock, and Hannibal, the mega-fandom with nearly all-male leads was Star Trek. But Star Trek did not need something like omegaverse to resolve these things. In-cannon explanations of Alien Anatomy, Alien Society, and Alien Future Tech proved pathways for forced relationships and babies in-universe. Plus, Vulcan’s already have an in-cannon mating cycle drive. Pregnant men as a concept were introduced in Star Trek fanfics and made it familiar and accepted, but omegaverse was not required to make mpreg happen.

Additionally, Fourth Wave feminism with its hyper awareness of sexual violence and the #MeToo movement was hitting right around 2010, which made the romance genre’s traditional bread-and-butter relationships of toppy, powerful man, and weak, submissive woman greatly unappealing to many female fandom writers and readers who were more conscious than ever of sexual power disparity and abuse.

    Enter omegaverse.

Omegaverse allowed female authors with little real-life exposure to true gay couples to write male/male couples using the female/male dynamics they were already familiar with, while also giving themselves permission to indulge in now-socially-taboo gender topics and power and abuse dynamics, such as dubious consent, biological imperatives to have children or a husband, and the appeal or rejection of traditional power dynamics in a relationship, all because these things were happening to two men, rather than involving a woman.
