Was Mötley Crüe’s 2005 Reunion Documentary All Fake?

The Hair Metal Guru | October 18, 2026

Mötley Crüe’s 2005 VH1 documentary Resurrecting Mötley Crüe was all about getting the band back together after they had supposedly called it quits. But watching it again today, how much of it was real, and how much was staged for the cameras?

The Hair Metal Guru and the crew revisit this memorable documentary, break down some of its most unbelievable moments, and discuss why so much of it feels orchestrated. We loved watching it back in the day, but does it hold up all these years later?

Was the Mötley Crüe reunion story the real deal, or was something else going on behind the scenes? Watch our discussion and let us know what YOU think in the comments!

Growing up I took everything that these bands said and done to heart. Now being 55 I realized everything is done for money and ego. Hard to find anything or anyone who is real today especially with the AI. Keep it real guys that's why I watch thanks.

I’ve been thinking about this video on and off all day. At one point, while driving to my concert, I started laughing thinking about you guys talking about your genuine reactions back then… Almost like we were all just a bunch of wholesome, clueless dorks. Like “OH Yay! Tommy’s gonna go along!” 😂 Everything you said in this makes sense, so now I can’t watch it without thinking about it.

The whole band has been about faking it since the day one.
They mightve made couple of decent songs along the way but that's about it.
The most blatant lie they still keep spreading via their official website is the claim that theyve sold "more than 100 million records" which is obviously a laughable claim. The true number is about 26 million, which is still a huge number considering the weakness of their material and total lack of any bona fide hit songs.
If they wouldve sold more than 100 million that would mean that Mötley has sold more records than AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Guns N Roses etc. which is obviously not true. All those bands are or have been touring stadiums which Mötley has never been able to do on their own.

Mötley was my favorite early teens band, no question about it. That said, even during the time of this documentary, there was just no interest on my end. It simply wasn't the same place and time of what most of us consider to be classic Crue. In fact, the last thing they did that I paid full attention to was the movie The Dirt.
In any event, had to stop by and give a little love to the Guru. Y'all have a great weekend! 🖤🤟🥁

In fairness that Brides of Destruction album was fantastic. The follow up without Nikki was… Not. The first one though was great. It should have gotten the attention Velvet Revolver got because it was better than Contraband.

As for the the doc itself I remember it and I felt like it was less a documentary and more a reality show masquerading as a doc.

Does anyone else find those crowds at the Whiskey to be kind of lame lol I’ve been watching QR clips and have seen other stuff lately, no one is going ape like I do lol even “Bang Your Head” they are standing around like goobers. Unless I saw a bad portion of it.

Guys, the documentary was never meant to be portrayed as completely factual. It was always in keeping with that element of manufactured drama for effect, that characterizes the reality shows very popular at the time. This talk seems a bit naïve.

The Crue busted and fans owned lol I gave such a minimal amount of shit for the Crue after that Corabi album, I never watched it. My fav rock doc was The Making of Pump by Aerosmith. Dang the great Anthrax pushed back lol

I don’t know if you are aware, but someone posted a warm up show from the Electric Factory in Philly right before the Swine tour. They play the whole album and some classics . Including a performance of your favorite song Brandon. I was at the show in 97 up front and it was Awesome. Got posted about a week ago..
