SLACK! : NOSTALGIA

The Most Disturbing Part of Tower of Terror Isn’t the Elevator

Dial-Up Days | October 18, 2026

Five people vanished from an elevator on Halloween night in 1939. But the explanation behind Disney’s Tower of Terror might be stranger than the haunting itself.

For this Spooktober episode, we’re checking back into the Hollywood Tower Hotel to revisit Tower of Terror (1997), starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst. What starts as a spooky mystery about a haunted elevator becomes a surprisingly dark story about jealousy, manipulation, and a family secret that changes everything.

A disgraced reporter, his teenage niece, and a mysterious elderly woman set out to free five missing passengers. But their rescue plan has one enormous problem: someone isn’t telling the truth.

We’re breaking down the movie’s wild plot, its creepiest moments, the clues hiding in Abigail’s story, and the ending that hits very differently when you watch it as an adult. Plus, we revisit how Disney turned a theme park attraction into a nostalgic Halloween ghost story.

Did you remember the final twist—or just the haunted elevator? Tell us your favorite Tower of Terror memory in the comments!

i heard the reason why this and "don't look under the bed" was taken off both Disney Channel was because "parents complains that it was too scary for kids" at the time. I was one of the those kids and while it was scary, it wasn't "scary scary!"

I rewatched this movie for the first time in years not too long ago and the ending ruined it for me. the fact that Abby killed all those people for essentially no reason then got to skip off to heaven was pure insanity. an evil sadistic woman
