I Almost Fell For a Fake Podcast Scam

A fake celebrity podcast wanted to interview me. Mostly about my Facebook login.

I’ve been getting podcast invitations from people claiming to represent Steve-O, Chelsea Handler and Adam Carolla. Very flattering. Very specific to my work. Very interested in getting access to my Facebook page.

So I replied to one and got on a Zoom call with Adam Carolla’s supposed producer, who had the minor disadvantage of knowing nothing about Adam Carolla.

Let’s look at the fake podcast scam targeting creators and celebrities, how these invitations turn into Facebook account theft, and why personalized scam emails are getting annoyingly convincing. I preferred it when criminals didn’t do their homework.

I once avoided a scam by being broke. Some woman called me claiming to be from my bank with a concern and needed me to answer a call from the bank confirming my identity. I didn't go through with it because she sounded cute and I didn't want her to see how little I had in my account; so I said I'd handle issue myself. She sounded disappointed and hung up. I later realized being too ashamed to admit being broke to woman saved me from a scam

Who is just dealing with a scam similar to this. I got emails me about magic show insisting that we zoom. I asked him for event details before scheduling a zoom. He said he couldn't get any details because his wife has those details. I asked him to ask his wife for the details. Apparently she will only give me the details over zoom. So…

Very smart of Jeff to write his name with G so the bird watching cartel won't find him, it's amazing how much drugs some of those guys do to stay hours just looking at birds, those flying goofy little fellas. Geoff, that's a good one, sounds great! Love you too

I’ll be honest, I don’t think you were ever almost scammed and that you actually saw this a mile away. I know it’s a shocking accusation but I don’t actually think you’re dumb.

Hi Ryan. I'm George Osbourne, former Chancellor of the Exchequer of Her Majesty's Government of The United Kingdom. Like everyone else I have a podcast and I'd love to have you on. Would 15th December at 16 hundred hours UK time suit you?

I haven't listened to the Adam Carolla show in years, but even I know that anyone who works for Adam, knows everything about Adam's work because he always talks about himself lol.

Hate to say this in the current anti-Indian political climate…… but wasn't the first major hint about this being a scam that the caller had a distinctly Indian accent. Indian-Americans working in their entertainment industry rarely have that. Even folks who move there in their 20s develop a hybrid American-ish accent, like Kunal Nayyar or Priyanka Chopra

Well the true guideline is that you don't pay for guests. You can comp expenses, but that's it. That stops lots of problems. If you want to invite someone or someone wants to do a story-that's no pay on each side. If I need to get a get, I just wait until the host is big enough to warrant that.

These scammers find themselves at the perfect moment in history, if they choose to rise to the occasion. Half of our government is billionaire narcissists who can't shut up about themselves and will be duped by the slightest flattery. These scammers could be the new Robin Hood, if only they can use their powers to do good instead of evil. Or at least use their powers to do evil against even more evil people.

Hi Ryan George "Pitch Meeting Guy" you are always welcome to come on our podcast! We at Geeks Speak Louder than Nerds (Not in anyway associated with Steve-O) would never try and scam you, unless you consider a small podcast using your fame to increase their own. We look forward to hearing from you. – Nick Co-hostI hope this shameless ploy works, okay so do i hit enter or comment to send this?

That zoom call. "Adam is a gem, but I don't know him since I just applied for a job, but I have also had that job for two years. "

To be honest though, I am a little surprised that a person bothered to take time to do that much when they have AI to just mass spam scams.

And yes, these things are everywhere. Currently, my work email is getting at least one per day, but it's still so badly written that it's obvious. The real problem is that blocking and reporting does nothing because they just come back with another fake address

All this guy probably wanted was to talk to you and get attention, and you gave it to him. Hes probably showing all his friends right now. Its good content sure but it encourages copycats.

I watched one Pitch Meeting years ago and thought well, that it something. I subscribed and haven't watch a single one since because I don't really like it and it's overly annoying, but the effort put forth deserved a subscribe. BTW Adam Corolla and Dr. Drew were the only good years of LoveLine.
