You Never Noticed Paul McCartney Was Playing Drums

Drumeo | October 17, 2026

Sir Paul McCartney has spent more than 60 years making music, but there’s one side of his musicianship that doesn’t get nearly enough attention: his drumming.

In this video, we explore Paul’s unexpected drumming career, from his early days before The Beatles became famous to iconic performances on “Back in the U.S.S.R.,” “Dear Prudence,” “Maybe I’m Amazed,” and “Band on the Run.” We’ll break down the grooves, fills, and musical instincts that define his playing style, exploring why Paul doesn’t necessarily drum like a conventional drummer — he drums like a songwriter.

With his new album The Boys of Dungeon Lane, we get another chance to hear Paul behind the drum kit. And with access to the drum stems straight from Paul’s team, we’ll go beyond the finished recordings to discover how his drumming has evolved — and whether the same musical instincts that shaped his earliest recordings are still there today.

More than 60 years after he first sat behind a drum kit, why does one of the greatest songwriters of all time keep coming back to the drums? Let’s find out.

Paul Jones with “The Dog Presides” ! Freakbeat masterpiece with Jeff Beck on electric, Macca on drums and Paul Samwell-Smith on bass. A tune from 1968 which not many know, and it’s an absolute stormer with a killer lineup of musicians

Interesting regarding Ringo and Paul playing a right handed kits but being left handed. Wings drummer Joe English was also left handed but played open handed with left stick on hi hat and ride cymbal. Great stuff 🥁👍

That drum solo on dear prudence, is most likely ringos that was overdubbed once he returned. There’s a great YouTube video showcasing how ringo has played fills vs Paul, which compared it to the dear prudence solo, and it’s definitely leading toward ringo.

Im in a band with a multi-instrumentalist. He's the songwriter too. It's pretty amazing how familiar he is with basically any instrument. He plays bass, guitar, drums and keys…his only fault is probably just his massive ego haha.

Dear Prudence was recorded on Ringo’s typical 4 piece super classic kit. It wasn’t until a few weeks after the Dear Prudence sessions (August 28-30, 1968) that Ringo received his 5 piece thermogloss kit with two rack toms (Sept 11th) The demonstration here is done with two rack toms which wouldn’t make sense given the timeline. Aside from that, I don’t even hear three distinct tom sounds on that outro.
